  • I refuse to accept my civil servants as my rulers
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

- Thomas Jefferson

Heard it mentioned and couldn't place the name so I Binged it. The first thing - he negotiated the release of Iranian hostages.  I pray you didn't have a painful death Mr.Christopher and may God have mercy on your soul.

There are some things regarding his biography which are a bit confusing such as his age at graduation from college ( 19 yrs. ? ) in Feb. 1945 ... Before being commissioned an Ensign in the Navy and heading for the Pacific ( that part , I guess , is believable ) .

I remember reading a Time magazine profile on him toward the end of the Carter administration. Two things stick in my mind from that article (and it was back in the day when Time still pretended to be objective)...

First, they mentioned that the Europeans had no shortage of yucks over his initials.

The other thing I remember was a story of WC's contribution to the planning of the ill-fated Iranian hostage rescue attempt. The discussion turned toward what would happen to the hostage takers at the hands of the US special forces. The military chief said that they would all be dispatched as quickly and quietly as possible...probably a suppressed double tap to the head. This description was said to have greatly upset WC and he is purported to have asked, "Couldn't we just shoot to wound instead?"

In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

CO, you probably know more about the sequence of events regarding the release, but IMO, the Iranians would have negotiated w/ a monkey and released them rather than worry about Reagan opening a can of whup-ass!
The last quote in Trap's post says it all about the guy. That and the fact that he was a darling of the D's gives me a sentiment completely opposite of yours.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist

About the best thing I can say about him, he was no where near as incompetent and insane as Madeline (Not at) Allbright!
We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.
