Technology? Woman trapped in SUV with stuck accelerator.
« on: September 03, 2012, 12:02:33 PM »
The accelerator on Lori Ubelstad's Kia Sorento got stuck while she was driving on the interstate.

Quote
For 30 minutes, Ubelstad dodged in and out of traffic at high speed, at times veering off the road to avoid crashing.

She traveled almost 60 miles from Missouri into Iowa with one patrol car in front of her and another behind.

Ubelstad yelled at other drivers and begged for help, trying everything the 911 dispatcher could offer, but she still couldn't stop her SUV.

"I knew I was going to die. I didn't have any doubt about. I really thought I was going to die ... and no matter what I did, I couldn't slow it down," she said.

Ubelstad was headed back home after a weekend in Kansas City, but shortly after stopping for gas in northern Missouri, her nightmare began.

"It was accelerating faster and faster. And I was looking at my GPS, and the number was going up and up and up," she said. "My foot isn't even on the accelerator. The emergency brake is on, all the way, I'm trying to move the brake, but it's not working."

When sheriff's deputies were trying to catch up, their in-car camera recorded the terrifying trip.

Ubelstad barreled through the median, blasted though construction zones and still couldn't shut the vehicle off or shift out of drive.

"When I passed Osceola, dispatchers said to try to lift up the accelerator and push on the brake. And so, I did that, and it slammed me from 119-mph to like nothing."

In the end, a trooper was able to climb into the vehicle and put it in park.

It's still unclear how the accelerator got stuck.

What is also unclear is why no one -- including Ubelstad, police, 911 dispatchers-- knew exactly what to do.

... The SUV eventually slowed down, apparently of its own volition, and was brought to a stop.  The dashcam footage shows the woman being helped out of the vehicle, still holding her phone to her ear.

... And everyone seemed to accept that the natural and logical response to one's car speeding out of control was to dial 9-1-1

A trooper climbed into her window at 110 MPH?  Looking at  the GPS and not the speedometer?

That she lifted up from the accelerator and pressed down on the brake to finally stop?

I think that's the only statement that was true.

Odds that Kia has a non-union factory in the US?

The accelerator never sticks at the pedal it's always at the engine.Lifting the pedal does nothing in cable or fly by wire cars.

Brake and parking (once referred to as emergency) brake applied?

Transmission in neutral?

Placing the shift lever in "R" will surely cause radical deceleration.

Placing the shift lever in "P" will cause extreme deceleration.

Ignition switch off?

I don't think the accelerator was ever "stuck."  Just this woman's brain.

I really do think she had the Shazaam! moment when she lifted her foot off the accelerator and figured out that that's step #1 in getting the car to start slowing down.

Yeah, either truly stupid...or a settlement-payday seeking parasite, either option isn't flattering...and stupid seems to be the consensus choice.   ::)
