Former Lions great Alex Karras dies at 77

Former All-Pro Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alex Karras passed away this morning in Los Angeles at the age of 77.

Karras had been given just days to live after recently experiencing kidney failure. In recent years, Karras had been bravely battling kidney disease, heart disease, stomach cancer and dementia.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Too bad, lot of ailments to battle, and he played in an era where headhunting, clotheslining and kneecapping was common, R.I.P. big guy.

We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

I guess I am one of those sub-standard Americans.....because I just do not care about football or any sports for that matter, but I like this guy on Webster and thought he was a good guy and funny.

When Karras was a player they were paid $50.00 per pre-season game.
Back then contracts were not as solid and players played in fear of injury
before the season started.

During one of those games he was lined up opposing Big Daddy Lipscomb,
which would have resulted in injury for one or both before the game ended,
before the snap he mentioned something about Big Daddy's mother and her
progeny a fist fight ensued and they were both ejected from the game.
It's said they went out and partied that night.

God speed Alex
