I lit a fire this morning - temps dipped to the upper 40's. Should hit mid 70's today, although winds will make it feel like lower 60's. Fall is definitely in the air now.

Day before yesterday I was on the water, in the near-80ยบ sunshine, in shirtsleeves and shorts.

The climate has definitely changed from two days ago.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

We had a chilly snap here, then it warmed up again to the 80s.  But the squirrel tails are bushier than I've seen 'em for a while.  Ma says that happens in anticipation of a cold winter.  Old Wives Tale?

Any cold sends them into a nut-burying panic...if they were just a bit smarter they'd remember where they buried them nuts and not have to tear up the whole lawn!

Up in the mountains the acorns are falling so continuously it sounds like a hail storm outside. Squirrels and chipmunks are gorging on them. This didn't happen last winter, which was mild, but it did happen the two winters before that, and those were winters of record cold and snow on the east coast.  I think there's something to it.

Yup.  The woods around my house have become extremely noisy and the squirrels are almost manic.

A pretty good 5 minute show shower at my house Saturday morning.  Enough to wet the car, not enough to accumulate, but definitely enough to take notice.

Saw a couple stray flakes on Saturday, that was about it.
