Cool. Never really thought about things like that.

Oh, thank you, thank you.
I've been on a tear trying to convert everything
to li-ion batteries and having little success.
This system will provide a reliable alternative
until I can work it out, thanks again.

I've looked and can't find the long time ago
discussion about flashlights and battery chargers.
Anybody?

Rats, CO.  Other than TEOTWAWKI,  I don't know what to suggest.

Points to my nitpicky desire to keep things oggranized, though, dunnit.   ;D

I recall that. We were probably talking about our Fenix brand flashlights and how awesome they are. Seriously, check out something like the Fenix TK40. I love mine. It has four primary modes (low, medium, high, turbo) and an alternate to each (steady flashing, SOS, intermittent strobe, continuous strobe). Uses 8 AA batteries (rechargeable NiMH works better in high drain "turbo" mode than alkaline). The turbo mode is bright as hell, like at least as bright as a car headlight. The low mode can run for 10 days straight.

The companion tech would be rechargeable batteries. I am a fan of the Sanyo Eneloop batteries. They have advanced nickel metal hydride battery technology to the point that it will retain 85% of its charge even after a year in storage. It used to be that rechargeables were of limited use because you pretty much had to charge them right before you wanted to use them. You couldn't charge them in advance because they would rapidly self-discharge after a few weeks.

Yes, my TK41 rocks!  And those Eneloop batteries are the best, you can buy online, I know CostCo will sell double A's but I've not seen other sizes.

 ::thumbsup::

PS - I know Trap was in on this discussion too.   ;)

I think AA and AAA are the only sizes they make.  They make spacers that you stick a AA cell into, which will then let it fit in place of a C or D cell.  I also recommend a good charger.  A lot of the kits come with very basic chargers that aren't the best.  I use a LaCrosse BC-700 charger that will charge with selectable current of 200, 500, or 700 mA and it automatically switches to trickle mode when it detects the cell cannot take any more charge. It also has a reconditioning mode that will charge and then discharge a battery over and over until its capacity is optimum. I've been able to restore some old rechargeables that I thought were shot by using that mode.
