I have .40 in my kit, simply b/c, the way my house is laid out, I have to worry about over-penetration 'cuz the kids would likely be down-range under some circumstances.
.40s&w is capable, with a proper load, but .45acp will always get the job done the first time.
.22lr, in a semi-auto pistol, is a fine choice. Small recoil allows for multiple follow-up shots in a small area, like in the trachea or eye socket in rapid succession, and that will stop any body.
