It's proven. I'm nuts
« on: March 27, 2013, 11:19:13 AM »
As if there was any doubt in anyone's mind before this

The "grow your own" thread prompted me to share

I went on a seed starting rampage this past weekend
I'm on an heirloom seed kick so that's all  planted.

Prior, I started some cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, head lettuce and strawberries

But, this past weekend I think I may have gone off the deep end.
I started:
72 Amish paste tomatoes
72 Roma paste tomatoes
72 various eating tomatoes
72 various sweet peppers
72 various "warm" peppers

I still need to start eggplant, late cabbage, watermelon, cantaloupe and squash

Can't even get into my ground yet but waiting to start peas, onions beets carrots, potatoes and corn

I have a lot of garden space but maybe not enough   ???

My daughter has some aspirations on starting one

I only have 3 acres. About 10K sq ft available for garden.
I'm interested in seeing how much of my own food I can provide for myself.

We'll see how hard she's willing to work to make it happen.
Her high school is a vo-tech and she's in a course called "Natural Resources"
It's pretty neat what all they cover.

They have a greenhouse, raise chickens and rabbits, make maple syrup, learn a little welding.
She'll get a dribble of solar and wind.

You'll have to spill the details on making chickens & rabbits a going concern, keep in mind you are talking to someone two generations removed from any kind of farming knowledge.

If all goes well you might want to look into canning those paste tomatoes.   ;D

Last time I tried to raise chickens was a disaster, No matter how many I planted they all just died.  Maybe I'm located in a bad soil area or I used the wrong fertilizer.

benb61, I don't think you planted those chickens by the right sign of the moon.
Pan, wife makes a pretty good sauce but doesn't like to can tomatoes for some reason.
One problem is I'm the only one here that likes a lot of the stuff. Cabbage and squash for example.

Libertas, my dad could grow anything. I didn't pay enough attention as a kid so I make a lot of mistakes.
This is my 3rd year with chickens.
I hatched all of these.
Getting ready, soon, to start incubating again.

I don't have rabbits but hear that they are the easiest source of protein you can have.

Pigs are coming this spring

Rabbits taste good, their pellets are excellent fertilizer and per pound they are the highest source of protein.

Charles, used to hunt rabbits all the time.
Hardly none around anymore. Not sure if it's predators or habitat.
When I was real little, I remember we had a cage with a rabbit or two.

I'm sure we ate it but never raised any more.
Tastes like chicken

Daughter says she will refuse to eat bunny.  Not sure about wife

When I was in the Air Force, the commissary carried rabit.  The ex-wife and I would have rabbit at least twice a month, tasty and easy to prepare.

Simmer it a long time in spaghetti sauce and serve over polenta

It's better steamed with wine vinegar and fresh mint and calamata olives and capers.

Rabbit is good.
John's suggestions sounds good but isn't how I eat so not sure how it would go over here.

Chicken fried is good but let's not forget....
