Quote
Raymond Frederick Harryhausen
Born: Los Angeles 29th June 1920
Died: London 7th May 2013.

The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, Visual Effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator. He was a multi-award winner which includes a special Oscar and BAFTA. Ray’s influence on today’s film makers was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations.

I'm a big Sci-Fi geek and Mr. Harryhausen will be deeply missed.  RIP Ray.

I remember as a kid being really scared of the Medusa effect he did for Clash of the Titans. There's simply too much reliance on digital effects now IMO. Great things can be done digitally, but now entire films are basically shot in front of a green screen and they just don't quite measure up.

JJ Abrams (of the latest Star Trek films) is unusual for a younger guy, he'll use CGI when he has to, favors a lot of the "old school" methods as much as possible, which I like, gives a little more realism to things.  Some folks are keeping the tried and true methods alive.

JJ Abrams will be directing the next Star Wars movie as well.  I would like to see that old school approach return, tastefully augmented with CGI as appropriate.
