For all of you cattle people who have been to my Cattle Marketing School ....

... do you remember my mini-rant about the importance of domestic ownership and control of food production?  Do remember my other mini-rant about the dangers of vertical integration and how extreme concentration of essential industries (er, like FOOD) makes a nation vulnerable to overthrow and takeover?

Um, yeah.

China just bought Smithfield.

Quote
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., or CFIUS, approved the transaction and it will be voted on by Smithfield shareholders at the company’s annual meeting Sept. 24. The government of Ukraine also approved the deal, according to the statement.

I have no idea at all what the government of Ukraine has to do with this.

The decline continues unabated. We'll be lucky if the place is still called the United States of America three years from now.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

So will Smithfield hams now be labeled 'Smoked in Occupied America'?

I'm not sure what's happening to the southeastern part of the Old Dominion.  Not too far away, in Hopewell, lives Tawana Whatevershechangedhernameto.  And there is a mega-mosque right outside Hopewell, as well.

I have no idea at all what the government of Ukraine has to do with this.

Their corporate webpage shows international operations raising hogs in Mexico (GCM & Norson), Romania (Smithfield Ferme), Poland (Agri Plus) and meat processing in Poland (Animex), Mexico (Norson), UK (Smithfield), Romania (Smithfield Prod) and with Campofrio Food Group headquartered in Spain operating in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain.

My guess is the jurnotard can't tell Romania from Ukraine...   ::facepalm::

They have a lot of brands on the shelf -  http://www.smithfieldfoods.com/our-brands/

First, that's the funniest part. Everything is so messed up.

Second, Smithfield ham. hmmm. So am I buying US ham from them or something from mexico?

Where in the country are ye?  If you're in NC, there's always Neese's.  If not, maybe there's a local hawg farmer you can deal with.  No joke.

I've been thinking about the buying 1/2 a cow or hog. I met someone a couple of years ago who does that every year and it's always been in the back of mind to look into it. She lives far from me so I'd have to find my own farmer to buy from.  But first things, first.  Hubby has to get a job so I can buy a freezer.

That is a good way to go, buying direct from a coop/butcher, 1/4, 1/2..whole cow or hog...beats supermarket prices easily.  Some places we've used in the past have on-site storage lockers...you just come in and sign out your key, walk into the big cold room and open your drawer and pull what you want to take home!  All freshly cut meat in your own personal freezer locker!

When I was a kid (back before Alex Bell invented the cell phone and the Wright Bros invented the Concorde), we raised almost all our own meat.
We no longer have the farm, only 3 acres from it.
But, we still raised pigs and chickens here.
I only have chickens now. Pigs soon
My wife told me that if I get pigs, she's out of here.
I told her that it was nice knowing her.

But, there is no comparison in taste and quality to home grown meat and the grocery store.
It will be slightly more expensive on the face of it.
However, did you ever notice how much water cooks out of store bought meat?
Awful expensive water.

Since you may not be able to grow your own, look for a small locally owned butcher shop or someone who does the slaughtering for the local animals.

You'll be way better off

We used to do that when I was first married. We got together as a family(my side) and buy sides of beef and whole hogs from a place that is no longer in bisiness. But 1300 pound sided cut wraped and blast froven and labeled for us.The place also smoked bacon that the sold in solid slabs or sliced.

I've found some places relatively close to me so I'm bookmarking those for when I can use them.  Some offer chicken and pork in addition to the beef. Seems like a really good idea.
