Redskins under pressure to change name
« on: September 12, 2013, 11:53:22 AM »
When will this ever end? I sincerely hope Snyder holds his ground because I believe a name change will destroy his brand. If he has any sense at all, he will realize the protestors do not buy tickets, do not buy merchandise and only have economic effect if he bows to their wishes. And the NFL....What a bunch of spineless douches. Give in to this name change and you'll find every team with an offensive name....or worse, you'll find your whole sport "offensive".

Goodell: NFL should listen to 'Redskins' protests

WASHINGTON (AP) — Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that the NFL should pay attention to those offended by the Washington Redskins nickname.

``If we are offending one person, we need to be listening,'' Goodell said Wednesday in an interview with 106.7 The Fan, ``and making sure that we're doing the right things to try to address that.''

It was a subtle change in position for Goodell, who had more strongly supported the nickname in his previous statements this year.

Goodell, who grew up in Washington and was a Redskins fan, said it was team owner Dan Snyder's decision as to whether the name will be changed.

``But,'' Goodell added, ``it is something that I want all of us to go out and make sure we're listening to our fans, listening to people who have a different view, and making sure that we continue to do what's right to make sure that team represents the strong tradition and history that it has for so many years.''

Snyder has vowed to never change the name, but momentum for a switch has been growing this year.

The name was attacked as racist at a high-profile symposium at the Smithsonian. High schools that use the nickname have come under increasing pressure to change it. A Native American tribe in upstate New York ran a radio ad campaign against the name leading up to Monday night's season-opener.

Another group of American Indians is planning a protest during Washington's game at Green Bay on Sunday. Some media outlets have stopped using ``Redskins.'' The name is also the subject of a long-running legal challenge from a group of Native Americans seeking to have the team lose its federal trademark protection.

Ten members of Congress recently wrote Goodell asking that the name be changed. At the time, Goodell responded by calling the name a ``unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect.'' At the Super Bowl in January, Goodell deflected a question on the controversy by saying: ``I think Dan Snyder and the organization have made it very clear that they're proud of that heritage and that name, and I believe fans are, too.''

On Wednesday, Goodell said: ``I know the team name is part of their history and tradition, and that's something that's important to the Redskins fans. And I think what we have to do, though, is we have to listen.''

The Redskins had no comment Wednesday on Goodell's remarks.

Yes.

Yes.

And Yes.

Goodell offends me, by his own criteria he must listen to me and consider grabbing himself by the throat with one hand and beat his face in with the other.  It is the only truly tolerant thing for him to do.

Oh, and...

Bob Costas (http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/14/bob-costas-defends-his-comments-about-the-redskins-on-radio-show/) can kiss my ass.  Is he going for the title of biggest jackass in sports journalism vacated by Keith Olbermann?

He certainly has taken it upon himself to be the sports arbiter-general of morality. Being that sports is pretty much a non-partisan activity, one would think that someone would be wise enough to rein him in. That fact that it hasn't happened is indicative to me that his bosses approve, and the pro leagues either don't care, or they're on board too.

I support the changing of the name. I would suggest we change from "Washington Redskins" to " Washington Canbiteme!"

I saw Red Eye cover this and skewer Costas for being such a finger in the PC wind moron.  They asked something like, what, he's covered sports for over 30-40 years and he's just now noticing the name Redskins?  They rightfully scorched Costas as a hypocrite, just as much of a hypocrite as he was after Sandy Hook with his pro-take away guns from the hoi polloi while I have my armed bodyguards rant on tv.  He's got a good memory to be a sports announcer.  No one's accusing him of actually having any deep thoughts or insights beyond the sports arena, though.

Personally, the Washington Redskins name offends me and I will not support that team until they drop Washington from their name.

I agree that the name "Washington Redskins" is offensive. In the spirit of not offending anyone, they should drop "washington" from their name. Anytime, anything comes out of Washington these days, it is highly offensive.

P.S. - for the sake of clarity, I'm referring to Washington DC, not the state of Washington.

Since we're filtering and censoring things that are offensive, can we get rid of obamacare, because that is highly offensive too.

Yep. If anyone should be offended it's not American Indian tribes, but a man named George who once led his fledgling country to victory over the superpower of his day.

The guy leading this bit of distraction is Elizabeth Warren's cousin, believe it or not

And a Democrat activist.

Quote
The American Indian leader spearheading the campaign to change the name of the Washington Redskins is not a legitimate member of the tribe he leads, according to a New York State Assemblywoman, but rather an Obama crony who is raking in casino money and paying back only small stipends to his tribe members.

Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, who is also the CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, is not recognized in his position by the Grand Council of Chiefs governing the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. Halbritter is not a legitimate member of the Oneida tribe, Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney told The Daily Caller.

“He is not even technically an Oneida. There is not a drop of Oneida in him,” Tenney said.

 ::hysterical::

Perhaps it is just lore handed down to him by his grandmother with the squared jawline and high cheekbones.

Sometimes, a friggin' football team's name is just a friggin' football team's name.

My memories of the Redskins start with Sonny Jurgensen.  Watched them finally win 3 in 8 years.  (Making the victories a nice trivia question:  Winning one Super Bowl isn't easy, much less three in eight years.  Even more difficult using three different quarterbacks in that short time frame.  What three quarterbacks led the Redskins to those Super Bowl victories, and which two won Super Bowl MVP?  Bonus question:  Who won the MVP when a quarterback did not?)*  For them to change their name is just getting ridiculous.  I'm not sure which was first, but you had the Bullets turn into the Wizards and the St. John's Redmen morph into the St, John's Red Storm; I know there's one or two other teams which changed their names for PC reasons that I can't remember at the moment.  Cripes, I'd so tired of this shyt.  I'd be proud to root for this Coal County's Bohunks, arch rivals of That Coal County's Pollocks.

Like him or not, it'll be damn hard for another white Don Rickles to have a successful career.  Or to have a white Jew make a Blazing Saddles.

Like I said, I'm really tired of this shyt.

I too am offended that Washington is having his name sullied...

I think the team should simply be called just the Redskins without the Washington...otherwise they can KMA and call themselves something more appropriate for the city like the DC Murderers...
