Personal information protection

Do any of you have an opinion about LifeLock and/or other such things? I've heard that those programs are really useless since the credit card companies, etc. keep tabs on these things, but I've also heard that it has protected people from hacked personal data being used.

I'm curious what others think too.

I'm happy with my credit card company.  They have caught several times the illegal use of my card. I shred documents, check my bank account often, etc.

I know it's possible for someone to create a parallel identity that you don't know about until it's too late but can some place lifelock prevent that?

I cannot answer your question.

I burn every scrap of paper that we discard, no exceptions made. I also check my bank account daily, and the IRA accounts.

My credit card company has called me when it saw charges occurring in distant parts of the country on the same day.  It was good, my wife and I were both buying things on line so the charges were legit.  I am happy that they took note.

I really don't know how effective Lifelock and the others are.

I find that keeping a close watch on your credit card use (my credit union keeps a running tally on line for each customer, it's very easy to check) and questioning every apparent problem entry goes a long way towards fighting theft.  My wife's FORMER bank didn't do this, you had to take your chances and wait until that end of the month statement arrives by snail mail, and then they fought her at every turn when she did find errors or outright theft (BoA).

American Express?  Yes, my Costco Amex is pretty tight about that.  It can get irritating, sometimes.

As for the services, you're only liable for something like $50 on CC fraud.  I do pay attention to what's going on , and I refuse to have a debit card.  That's where your real risk is, debit cards, having someone directly drain your bank account.

Just say no.

One time I forgot to advise the credit card companies that we'd be traveling, and they froze all of my accounts until I called them and cleared things up. The purchases far away from home triggered that.
