And Hitler and the Nazis never fully trusted the Wehrmacht, or any of the traditional German institutions for that matter. That's why they setup parallel organizations within the framework of the Nazi party. Why did they have a Waffen SS deployed in the field of battle, when they already have a very competent Wehrmacht? I have no doubt that they would have eventually replaced the Wehrmacht with the Waffen SS if the entire regime hadn't been destroyed in WWII.
I can't help but think of that every time I hear that "civil force just as powerful, just as well funded as the military" line. Hyperbole? Maybe, but maybe not. It's pretty clear that at the very least they are purging government, and the armed forces in particular, of people who aren't willing to toe the company line.
