September 16th update of the news item on the upcoming electric grid test which was originally posted here on September 11, 2013.

Based on an August 16th New York Times article, it appears that this November 13th/14th drill will not involve a shut down of the electrical grid.

The North American Utility Reliability Corporation (mentioned in the above article) is in charge of planning this upcoming November drill which is called Grid Ex-II.  I wrote to Bill Lawrence who is the man in charge saying:

“Dear Mr. Lawrence, …  I have a question about the upcoming November 13th/14th test scheduled to take place in just two months.  First, I was wondering whether NERC the main agency overseeing this drill?  Also, there are postings on the internet indicating that on these days the U.S. will be participating with Canada and Mexico in an excercise to examine the system response to a hypothetical EMP event or cyber attack and some postings claim that the entire electrical grid will be shut down during these two days.  Is there any truth to this?  I need to have some informed input on this since I find this hard to believe.”

He responded:
“Dr. LaViolette, NERC is running a simulated exercise to practice crisis response and information sharing.  No real power outages will occur due to this exercise.  The scenario does not involve EMP.”

Checking out the NERC website, one finds that this is an expanded version of a Grid drill that they had previously conducted in November 2011.  Apparently, there is a lot of misinformation that was posted about this on the internet that was not previously checked out.  So disregard concerns voiced in my original posting that this exercise will involve a planned blackout and speculations that its dates may have been chosen to prepare for a real event.

No one will shoot the messenger here. .  We all take this stuff with a grain of salt, but I think very few are willing to dismiss it out of hand at this point.
We have seen too many things. We have seen Alex Jones and Info Wars facts be right, even when the spin is wrong.  This may be spin. It may not be.
 
 It bothers me more that  the Oathkeepers war gamed this very scenario and thought it likely, and told thier memebers to actively form up and begin drilling.

 It has, however, gotten too much press IMO to be "THE EVENT" -  yes, there has been a pattern of potential false flags being staged during such drills or shortly after them, but going for this one at this time will send up a flare that will let patriots know this IS IT.  Internet down. Cell Towers Down. Get the AR or AK out, get your like minded neighbors, and get ready to resist.
These particular days and this event were simply too well publicized. If such an event will occur, I suspect the more likely date will be Thanksgiving or Christmas, when many are travelling and away from their homes, out of their element. They left their weapons and stores  at home, and are with family and people they know will fight their calls to prepare and who are not prepared themselves.  (that'll teach you to still associate with Liberals, even if they are "family" )

 The power is out. Nothing to worry about.  Just light some candles and eat your turkey.  Play some cards, drink some beer and go to bed.  It will all be fixed by morning. Only it isn't.

We're not really worried, Weisshaupt. We've eaten holiday and other meals with either candles and lamps, or with the generator going. If it's cold, I'll fire up the generator so the boiler can circulate hot water throughout the house, and we'll start a nice log fire in the fireplace.

On a more serious note, Mrs Sailor and I still have our hurricane supplies and preps in place.  We can survive quite a while without the 21st century, or even the latter half of the 20th.  She grew up dirt poor in Florida's hurricane alley.  I grew up on a farm in northern Michigan where loooong power outages in mid-winter were to be expected.  Neither of us feels comfortable if we don't have a reserve to draw on if the fecal matter hits the fan and guns to protect ourselves if the wolves come calling.

Probably.  It was my understanding it was supposed to be a simulated event.  The real danger lies in the fact that a lot of drills seem to coincide or occur shortly before an event.  As I said before, the word was out about this one.  If the power had gone out, we would have all been far more wary of the event.  They are far more likely to hit us during a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, where many will be away from their homes and support structures. They they you have left home ( you took your cell phone right?)  and the power is out so we can't co-ordinate or share information on line or on the telecom infrastructure. ( Telecom sites are all backed up by the way.. if both the power and your land line or cell phone phone are dead   you know something is up..)
