Is there any clearer evidence that bureaucracies inevitably become self-interested, self-serving entities? Every time you hear some variation of the phrase "the government has an interest in", that's proof that it is operating outside its mandate.
The government has no interests of its own. It does not have the prerogative to create or decide upon what is in its interest. Its interests are what we tell it they are, and not one iota more. And if we decide something is no longer in the government's interest, that is our prerogative. What's next, will bottled water become a drug if its labeler claims it hydrates and eliminates thirst?
