Dr Who!!!!
« on: November 23, 2013, 01:47:44 PM »
Although we are more focussed on our 50th anniversary here, the Brits are celebrating a cultural 50th today.

This is the 50th anniversary of the debut of Dr Who.
Dr Who has gone through 11 regenerations and prepare for the 12th Dr.

My son has watched for a while and my daughter has caught on too.
I am a late arrival to  Dr Who because I seldom watch TV

However, as I got tired of sitting at my desk all day and evening, I ventured to the living room to unwind in ftont of the telly.

With my Direct subscription, I get 200+ stations and nothing to watch.
I'm tired of pawn shops, ancient aliens, Sasquatch and pretty much else that's reality tv and found myself enjoying the escapism of Dr Who
BBC America has had wall to wall Dr Who all week with it all culminating today

I get the feeling that, to the Brits, this a little like the week leading up to the Superbowl

Okay, so I am just about halfway through the reboot, during which the Kids started watching with me. My son declined the offer to watch the classic Dr Who 63 to 96. Why do they let you vote when these kids haven't even seen the old ones?

Matt Smith was the current Doctor at the time of the poll and beat Tom Baker? .  Name recognition anyone? (stupid polls)   And He is one of the worst IMO. Tennant is almost done in our viewing and I am not looking forward to three seasons of Matt Smith.

At least I have Day of the Doctor to look forward to ( which aired on the 50th anniversary when I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention and didn't see )

I have to admit Tennant/Piper was pretty awesome. Maybe as awesome   as Baker/Sladen. Maybe more awesome.  But I won't tell my son that. Its fun to watch him get so passionate about it :)

I can't stand this guy now.
I started watching the Dr under Matt Smith and enjoyed him. Tennant and Eccleston, too.

Occasionally, I can get a weak over the air station that plays really old ones.
They were soooo bad.
I can't believe he lasted as long as he did.

Of course BBC was only a couple channels and really bad programming back then

Whovian's.

I still like Whooter's and I'm not afraid to say it.  :D
We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

I like the old ones myself, but then that is probably nostalgia kicking in - I watched pretty avidly during the period when PBS was showing the Tom Baker episodes. They say you never forget your first Doctor.  Peter Capaldi  is okay with me.. at least Clara doesn't keep Out-Doctoring him.. during the Matt Smith's I have seen  it almost seems like Clara  is the Doctor and Matt Smith is the assistant. Oh well, I am usually too busy watching Clara to notice what Smith is doing anyway.

As far as the companions, I think it's pretty close between Martha Jones and Billie Piper.

Some people hate Clara but I liked her well enough.

I'm not enough of a dedicated Whovian (whooter?) to have seen more that a little bit of the older Drs.

Okay, moving into Matt Smith from Tennant was still pretty jarring. But I think having seen ALL of the classic Dr Who changed my perspective.  I have seen worse. Much worse.  So Smith is growing on me a bit.  I didn't realize it on the first run through ( which was incomplete)  but I think I was responding more to Russel T Davies leaving the show's writing than I was to Matt Smith's doctor. I joke with my son- Matt Smith is the Doctor turned up to 11. (because he is doctor #11) Its TOO Doctory (ish?)  It just tends more to the silly and  ridiculous than it should.  That's not Matt Smith's fault. Its Moffat's. Amy wishes the Doctor back into existence. Please stop. That is stupid. Its not a magic box. Its a Machine so advanced it appears to be magic. There IS a difference Moffat!

But I just watch the Christmas Carol Matt Smith Christmas Special,  and yeah I liked it. Flying Shark with Carriage in tow and all. ( and yes the flying shark with Carriage is STILL Moffat Stupid. )  but in all its not annoying me to the degree it did on the Matt Smith's I saw before.  In truth I stopped following Dr. Who after Baker on the first go round too.  Peter Davidison was fine- probably better than Pertwee or Troughton. but  he was just - well - not what I wanted after Baker.  But yeah I have changed my mind about Smith. Its not him so much as the writing. His portrayal is up there in the top half. Maybe even top 4. Its just that Moffat decided stupid was fun, and there is a lot of Stupid.  It was the double whammy of both Tennant and Davies leaving at the same time that made it brutal.  So yea Matt Smith. Die Steven Moffat.

(more on that here)

And yes Weeping Angel and  Girl in the fireplace and , to a lesser degree the Empty Child were some of the best Dr Who reboots ( or even of all time)  Moffat just didn't have the vision to carry it on. '

Moffatt may be the one responsible for the current debacle with Capaldi.
I haven't seen any of this season since I cut cable but not sure I'd watch, anyhow.

It was agony, to me, to watch last season.

I've kind of surmised that Capaldi is a throwback to the Doctors before Eccleston, Tennant and Smith.

I haven't seen a lot of them.

Speaking of Tennant, I see he's a main character and bad guy in Netflix' original Series, Jessica Jones.

It was just released yesterday but I've been immersed in the Man in the High Castle and haven't seen it yet.

If it's anywhere as good as Daredevil, it should be good.
