The US jumped on the Hong Kong protests to ratchet things up.
The protest was not exactly organic. The HK law at the center of the original protests was not what the west said it was. The US may have done this to provoke a crack down that would influence the Taiwan election, which it did. HK kinda realizes they were had. Alleged Chinese docs translated into English were actually the other way around. etc.

I recall a couple weeks ago. I hear sudden increased chatter from Ukr that Russia will blow up the Zap nuke plant they control. Kiev is training the locals on what to do and handing out iodine pills. A US RC 135 nuke sniffing pane leaves US for EU. Two US senators introduce resolution calling for NATO involvement in UKr if Russia blows up the plant. All in the same week. Then Russia says Kiev planes to hit the plant with a dirty bomb warhead enough to set off nuke sensors around EU. Rumors were flying that the US told Kiev to not even think about it.
