My newest toy, part 3
« on: October 18, 2014, 07:07:18 PM »
I have been after one of these for quite a while now.  The Colt seems to be a bit hard to find in this configuration, so when I found one at Bud's Gun Shop I jumped on it.  I wanted something as close to the old school M16 as possible.  This one is essentially a civilian version of the M16A4 used by the Marine Corps.

Get to shoot 'er yet?
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

No, not yet.  Just picked it up today in fact.  It's probably going to be a few weeks before I have a chance to shoot it.  For now it's just eye candy and occasional fondling  ::danceban::

Nice G!
Are you gonna leave the carrying handle and rear peep or put optics on the rail?

I plan to leave the carry handle and A2 iron sights.  I'm kind of an iron sights guy.  But I know lots of guys love the holographic sights like the EOTech, so I might consider one at some point.  I like that it has a full rail if I do want to go that route.

I'm hardly an expert on the AR platform, still a newbie really, but I can already tell this Colt is so much tighter than the DPMS carbine I have. Pulling back the charging handle and releasing the bolt is smooth as silk.  It doesn't have the clunky feel that my other AR has. I can't wait to shoot it.

Youngest son brought his to the range last time we went. Since I'd never fired an AR platform before, I was kind of anxious to rip a couple rounds. Got it on the bench, and the batteries were dead in the sight.

And THAT, boys and girls, is why we never have battery operated toys at my house.

There are several different scopes which have a reticle etched in the glass and is viewable even when off/dead battery situation. Don't buy cheapo stuff, but spending about $300 or more for quality optics is money well spent. Optics are superior to iron sights in almost every way.
Target acquisition, target id if magnified, low light situations when the rear peep is too small to see through, no parallax so the impact is where the dot is.
Yes, carry spares, and buy a scope which has an easily accessed battery for a quick change. And in the event of a complete failure or damage to the unit, mount BUIS in coincidence so you can use the pop up irons in a pinch by looking through the dead scope.
You have to consider why almost every military issue rifle and, literally, every competition rifle has optics mounted. I think youre selling yourself short by eschewing optics.

Nice acquisition!  That description of smooth bolt action gave me a tickle!   ::thumbsup::

Thanks Dan. You are right of course that optics are superior in just about every possible way.  I will most likely put some optics on it (not sure yet about whether I want traditional glass or an electronic sight). For now I want to become competent with the rifle using the irons, and then graduate to the more advanced sighting systems.
