We just had an earthquake ....
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:01:55 PM »
East coast of US, 5.8 mag., just south northwest of Richmond, VA.

Felt it right here, too; Mark Belling sitting in for Rush in NYC, felt it as well.

Pentagon and Capitol Bldg. evacuated.

Now the "news" ghouls have started with on-site reports and "are there any injuries?" (pleasepleaseplease, let there be injuries).

I felt it too.  I was sitting in my car taking a smoke break and noticed it start shaking.  One co-worker inside the building also felt it and heard a rattling sound, but three others did not.

You can fill out the "Did you feel it?" form at the USGS website.  I submitted a report earlier this afternoon.  It took me three tries to get through.  I guess their server was pretty busy.

At the moment there have been over 12,000 reports from 3500 different zip codes.

Of course they will, since it affected Washington, DC and New York City, the twin hubs of the LSM universe.

But seriously, are California quakes felt over such a large area?  Seismic waves propagate through some kinds of rock better than others.  This quake, even though it was of middling intensity, was felt by millions of people over an enormous area--almost the entire eastern half of the country.

In my area, southeastern Pennsylvania, there are occasional quakes of magnitude 2 or 3 which are felt by a handful of people who happen to be awake and close to the epicenter.  I've never felt one of those, so this was my first earthquake.

The Obama Administration just announced that the Virginia Earthquake was caused
by a previoulsy unknown fault located deep underneath Virginia. They are
calling it the Bush Fault.....   ::rimshot::

I'm just sorry I wasn't at home when it happened.  They say that animals behave strangely before earthquakes, and I'd like to have seen whether my cats did anything unusual.

On the other hand, cats are pretty strange critters to begin with, so I don't know how I would have been able to tell if they were acting more strangely then usual.

There are three major faults running through the DC area:

It's Bush's fault.
It's the Tea Party's fault.
It's not my fault.

Some idiot on the local forum just posted a speculative piece on "did fracking cause" the earthquake.

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Edgewood, Maryland, I was on a roof thirty feet up when suddenly thecrappy constructed condo started moving back and forth. Knew what it was and was concerned because I knew how shoddy the construction of the structure was. I naturally yelled down to the ground crew to beware the tsunami. Yes they asked , seriously?
