Title: A new target: Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH)
Post by: IronDioPriest on March 20, 2011, 09:16:21 AM
Rep. LaTourette Tells Transit Advocates to Ask Congress for What They Need (http://dc.streetsblog.org/2011/03/16/rep-latourette-tells-transit-advocates-to-ask-congress-for-what-they-need/)

Transit officials spent the day on Capitol Hill yesterday, meeting with Congressional offices as part of the American Public Transportation Association’s legislative conference.

Transportation Committee Chair John Mica suggested they ask members for a six-year bill. Secretary Ray LaHood urged them to ask for support for President Obama’s “big, bold vision” for transportation.

Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH) was a little more blunt. “You’d be nuts to ask for SAFETEA-LU levels,” he said. “That’s nuts.”

He told the transit professionals in the APTA crowd that they shouldn’t be shy about asking for significant funding increases. Whereas the Bike Summit last week stuck to a modest request (begging lawmakers not to slash the little funding cycling gets), LaTourette said the transit advocates would be “nuts” to take that route.

“How are we going to build America and put people back to work without robust funding in the transportation sector?” he asked. “If you don’t [ask for more funding], shame on you when your systems deteriorate.”

<snip>

...Whether we raise the gas tax at the pump or by the barrel, or start a vehicle-miles-traveled fee program, or toll more, we’re going to need more revenue, LaTourette said, but no one’s willing to do it. “Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die.”

“You’ve got to get in people’s faces,” he told APTA participants. “You’ve got to go in and ask for something” — even of the “knuckledraggers that came in in the last election that hate taxes.” He said it’s only fair that people pay for the transportation infrastructure they use.

I wonder if the GOP can ever be purged of influence by people like this. They weaken the party, undercut the party platform, and ultimately aid the Left in destroying America.

Not a smiley, but, it'll do.

This is where the Democrats are orders of magnitude smarter than the Republicans when it comes to pure political instinct. Pelosi throws "blue dogs" under the bus at every opportunity. As far as she and her party are concerned, a temporary decrease in the size of their caucus is a price worth paying to purge their party of members who "don't get it".

The Republicans need to do the same. Trouble is, I'm starting to think we're using the term RINO improperly. We are the RINOs, it would seem. The Boehners and Cantors and LaTourettes are apparently the mainline Republican.

We're at a transition that only hindsight will be able to pinpoint, where the Republican party goes from being an avenue of electoral convenience to being active opponents of the movement to restore our constitutional republic. I'm honestly gobsmacked by the naked hostility we've seen in the past week or two. Siccing anonymous "aides" on the very grassroots movement that gave these a-holes their historic majority just a few months ago? Not only that, but publishing their screeds in left wing publications to the delight of the socialists?

I'm no longer an advocate of claiming control of the GOP by primarying out the turds. The whole structure stinks too much, I want nothing to do with the baggage that would come with just the very name "Republican" and all its symbols. It's time for them to go the way of their own predecessor, the Whigs. Apparently they just keep passing on their defective political genes.

You could be right.  But even by your own admission we may not know for sure until it is way too late.  And everybody (conservatives and mainline/RINO Repub's) are loath to play a game of chicken for keeps.  There seems to be more desire on the former now, since the frustration with these morons (as evidenced in your points) seems to be gaining in ardor.  While acknowledging it may already be too late for a 3rd party...an argument could be made that we have nothing else to lose.  Either way, things look more than just problematic, don't they?

OK, on that downer note, I'm gonna eat some chow and wash it down with liberal quantities of beer and end the night on a better note!

I'm just beyond frustrated. I definitely get the message that GOP "leader"ship is trying to communicate: you provincial proles are not getting hold of the steering wheel in this party. To be behaving towards this unprecedented grassroots enthusiasm with such hostility, and this soon?

Boehner and his ilk of nutless wonders were right about one thing, though. After the midterms they kept saying "The American people have given us a second chance. There won't be a third." And you are damn right about that, you carrot-faced tanning bed crybaby.

We need to build a list of Republican party members to oppose in their primaries.

The list can start with this guy's name.

When did this turd come floating to the surface??Has he forgotten that his Governor just turned down the gift of high speed rail from the feds??Is it me or are there fewer turds around so the ones left seem to pop out even more?

We really do need a list so we can give to the challengers lord know he needs a challenge.

It would be a lot of work for somebody to keep such a list on the forum.

I think what you would have to do is keep the list on the first entry of the forum thread and continually update it with hyperlinks to the relevant part of the thread so that anyone looking could quickly discover why a particular bottom feeder made the list.

The list would have to be kept up to date as the election season progresses so that not only would you know who not to support but who is running against them in the primary and how to get donations to the opponent.

A lot of work. Anyone want the job?

It might bring more traffic to the forum if it became known that such a list existed. People would want to nominate their favorite scumbag  to the list and find out who to support not only locally but nationwide. There are fewer and fewer people supporting the RNC, the NRSC and the NRCC because they are nothing more than incumbent re-election funds. People need to know who to send their contributions to where it will make a difference.

Pukes like this guy have got to go.

Data base for the Resistance.  That's a tall order, if achieved it could become a magnet.

This software allows you to create a 'sticky', that is, a thread that would always stay on top of it's category. That 'sticky' could include instructions for locating 'bad' repubs, and their 'good' primary opponents, and then pointing them to another thread to post their findings.

The author of the 'sticky' thread, could then 'modify' it as the new information comes in, on the other thread. I think that a moderator could 'close' the 'sticky' thread, to keep people from posting to it, but it would still allow the author to 'modify' it, as new information comes available.

Just a thought......not really a classical database......but it would provide a way for posters to add information without cluttering the 'sticky' thread, thus making it easy for people who wish to use the information, find what they want easily.

Trap's idea would knock one out of the park.  We've had some stickies before and you are right about the clutter.  The more intuitive and less work for the "seeker" would make it more attractive.  A go to spot.

There would surely be plenty of participant input data. Organizing and cross referencing etc would be the bear.  This type of knowledge base is something Pubbies don't do and the Democrats are all over it.  I think it has to do with, as G32 http://itsaboutliberty.com/index.php/topic,628.msg5923.html#msg5923 said it:

They don't want us that involved, the only participation they want from us is our money and grunt work for "their" candidate.  The Democrats however, say, this is the plan and we will fight with everything we've got and we want you to join in, and they make the necessary tools available.

Trap's data base tool is a not done by Republicans. Not by the biggest hottest blogger or any PAC or the RNC.  It's not done because they are all competing against each other and as a result WE (not the Democrats) are the one's who get the candidate selected by committee.  That's some fat irony.

It's a Tea Party concept, part of the end round around the primary.

I think Radioman's idea of creating a sticky thread and then using "modify" instead of posting a new entry would work best.  People can update postings they created.  If someone has new info to add to a posting somebody else made, all you would have to do is PM them to append their post.  Organizationally though, I'm not sure if we want 50 posts for all 50 states or not, or if breaking things up into regions would work.  I like the idea of one state per contributor, but it is doubtful we have people from all 50 states represented here so people might need to double up responsibilities and/or take states not of their own.  But it is a hell of a good idea and I think it would pull in a lot of interest!  My two cents anyway.

I think that this idea needs to be moved to its own thread, maybe in the forums suggestions. It is also possible to create 'home page' for this website, that can be used to track this kind of information, with a prominent link to this forum.

I am attempting to move this subject over to forums suggestions, maybe where it will get more traction.

At the www.itsaboutliberty.com (http://www.itsaboutliberty.com) browsers automatically pull up default.htm or index.htm or maybe something similar. I'm saying that you can create a folder for the forum such as /forum and move the software and database there. Then build a web page to accept the default as the 'new' starting point.

This new home page could be used for a lot of things to make 'itsaboutliberty' relevant. Things that will eventually capture search bots and give higher releavancy ratings. Also, on the new 'home' page could be direct links that would address the repub database issue.

Hmmm...

So what you are saying is create a home page that the forum is merely a part of. Now where have I seen that before...

Oh yeah, Powerline.

Now wouldn't that be interesting.

At any rate, we can still get this thing started right now by starting a thread and, as suggested, making it a sticky topic. The thread author will have to keep the list up to date on the original post and have names point to permalinks within the thread as to why RINO X needs to be primaried and why CHALLENGER Y needs support, etc.

If a page gets built then the "database" (and I use that term loosely) could be transfered there. But, yes, I think that if a list such as this could be built then it could result in our site being more of a destination for the search engine reasons mentioned.

I will put the thing up and see where it goes. If anywhere.

BAS Definitions:

"LaTourette Syndrome" A peculiar political disorder manifested in squishy RINO Republicans who claim to run as fiscal conservatives in order to give lip service to the Tea Party, but have the annoying habit of voting with the opposite party and generally pissing off conservatives. Named for worst offender (Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH)) but can just as easily apply to others. See: Lindsay Graham; Olympia Snowe
