Title: The Greatest Play in Major League Baseball History: 4/25/76
Post by: IronDioPriest on April 26, 2011, 09:05:44 AM
April 25th, 1976: Rick Monday saves the American Flag.

"People ask, 'are you upset because you've played nineteen seasons in the major league, and you're known primarily for stopping two people from burning the American flag?' If that's all you're known for, it's not a bad thing at all."

Damn right!

I'm glad you posted that, IDP; I'd forgotten to do so and I didn't want that falling down the memory hole once again.

I remember it fairly well too - I was 13 at the time. I'm not sure if my memory of it is primarily from when it actually happened, or from subsequent re-tellings, but I know for sure I was aware of it when it happened.

These kinds of things have meaning, and can give us hope. They serve as a reminder of decency, patriotism, honor, and the value of those who came before who exemplified these characteristics.

We can be certain that many on today's Left think that Rick Monday's action was wasted effort, and no big deal. They think the values inherent in the action are contemptible.

As long as people who understand why Rick Monday did what he did still live free in America, America will not fall. They'll have to kill us all if they want that essentially American spirit to die. Let the Left choke on its contempt.

Back when Baseball was America's Game!

I think I woulda' been tempted to take different measures.

Yeah. In hindsight I would've liked to have lit those two morons on fire or bust 'em in the chops!  But had I been there, even though I was a punk teenager with authority issues at that time, I would've have recoiled at someone trying to burn our flag and wondered what kind of hippie rejects these two losers are!
