Title: Drumming
Post by: patentlymn on January 18, 2022, 09:20:43 PM
I always liked drumming, especially rudimental drumming, as done in drum corps. There are now independent drum lines as well. The skill level is insanely high. Drum and Bugle Corps have shrunk in number and are now regional in nature.

Thanks to the internet there are lots of videos available. I always had a thing for female drummers as my first GF was one.

Anyway, here are a few minute long clips including a girl drummer from the Santa Clara Vanguard. She was likely the best female drummer in the US then.

Fun! 1 min long.

Don't know why I was expecting marching band...   ???
Title: Re: Drumming

Drumming has changed in recent years. There were 2 or 3 styles of marching band. There was the typical high stepping college band that kinda sucked IMO. Then there were the marching bands that converted over more to the Drum and Bugle Corps style, more military type marching.

It was not unusual for a 15 year old drum corps drummer being much better than the best drummer in a college marching band. There were old remarks from college drummers hearing a drum corps drum line for the first time. Shock and awe

That has changed some as more marching bands adopted to drum corps styles and the internet showed people how to drum. The Vikings Skol Line is pretty good.

Many drummers mocked the movie Drum Line as an inaccurate POS. Turns out that historically black colleges and universities have their own styles and practices that are different. I hated the movie for several reasons. One was that the camera could never show the whole actor drummer up close when drumming because they could not drum. Either the heads of the actors or the hands of the real drummers or the real drummers from far away. The camera jerked all over the place as a result.

I heard Karen Carpenter once. She was a very good drummer.  There is a rising TV reporter/host Kim Iversen. She majored in philosophy and music performance as a jazz drummer and before that a snare drummer. I have no idea how good she was.

I cannot get this 2 min song out of head. Drum Corps snare in the center with a HS student she tutored on either side.
https://youtu.be/JS4rCX-Mi3I

I realize drum corps is kinda closed off from the world. They used to be affordable youth groups that kept kids off the streets. E.g. St. Paul Scouts. Now only maybe 1% remain and they are regional and expensive to join.  I surfed the web lately.

I remember seeing a super snare drummer from Boston Charlie Poole when he was young. Then he aged out and taught the 27th Lancers. Turns out there was a drummer Paul Rennick. He went on to teach several drum lines later Santa Clara Vanguard. Drum Corps added marimbas and vibes etc. His wife taught those.

At Santa Clara he taught a freak of nature Bryce Larsen (actually he just practiced a lot) and also
Eliana Yamouni who is in the center of the video above and the short drummer in one video below. Rennick went on to teach at the University of North Texas and Bryce went there and is center snare in both videos below. Weird and scary how much I know and I have been far removed for decades. The skill level now is insane.

Paul Rennick is teaching below. Small world.

It might not be my bag, but whatever gets kids outside and off video games and gives them enjoyment into adulthood...I say encourage it and support it.

How about these drummers?

Found this on the Vikings Skol line.
I read a review once about NFL drum lines and they were rated the best by the reviewer.

I had no idea there were so many independent drum lines.
I got to following this Kyle guy. It seems he played in U of M marching band and they were in a super bowl half time show in Mpls.
https://youtu.be/mMMp3bXIbZA?t=33

He is hard core. He was in a drum corps The Blue Coats from Canton OH. A good corps. Then he apparently moved to CA for a while and marched in a stand alone drum line Broken City in California. Also Minnesota Brass, which is a senior corps, OK to be over 21.

This touches on what a "bubble" this drumming is. All 3 are from Eden Prairie HS.
I think all 3 played snare with Blue Coats Drum and Bugle Corps. It is such an intense small world.
Asian dude plays for MN Vikings Skol line. Also Zach. Bearded guy.

Youtube made the skill level increase to insane levels.
https://youtu.be/v-0STlVRJV0
Chino Hills is a HS band from California that is very  good.
Blue Coats are an under 21 drum corps from Canton OH.
MN Brass is an all age drum and bugle corps from Mpls.
Broken City is an under 21 stand alone WGI drum line from California. The Asian dude moved to CA to march with them.
Blue Devils is very good drum and bugle corps from California with a top drum line.

Drum and Bugle Corps was a HUGE part of my Dad and two uncles’ youth. We used to go with Grandma and Grandpa as a whole family to watch the competitions in St. Paul when I was really little. I vaguely remember it, more like flashes of images and sounds than actual memories. I remember one team… the Blue-something-or-others… was the team to beat, or it least that’s my recollection.

It is sad but the number of drum corps shrunk about 100x since then. They are now often regional or national and the dues for one year are about $4,000. The Asian dude in the video was from Mpls but marched in Blue Coats in Canton OH. The skill level of snare drummers is very high now, thanks to the internet.

There used to be The St. Paul Scouts. Pretty good. Also the Hamms Indians? Before my time. Most good corps were from big cities and actually did get kids off the streets.

The drum corps you might be thinking of is The Blue Stars, from Lacrosse WI. My first GF was from Milwaukee and marched with Blue Stars for a couple summers. She played 'quads' or triple tenor drums. I saw a Blue Stars sticker on a car at Irondale HS.

I was in Madison Scouts but quit right before they got good. My brother was in 1975 when they went undefeated all season. Unheard of.

Here is a clip from 1988. Awesome.

Drum lines are so advanced now. Maybe due to the internet.

Three chicks in the snare line. Very rare. Most common number is zero.

You have to be a drum geek to really appreciate this drum line. They are playing some really difficult stuff.
Some of the views are blocked by people. The guys standing in front are staff. They start with warm up stuff then some stuff from the show.

Kinda cute. Some 12 year old learns the drum book from internet then shows up at a practice.
He later joins that drum line and ages out at 21 years old.

Just found this. Like most good drummers she started out in drum corps. I recall some photos of her as a little girl with a shako (tall band type hat with plume like west point) very tall compared to her.
She is a jazz drummer now.

I hate modern drum corps. I like the warm up exercises better than their show.
Here they do a known warm up exercise "Spanks" with the USMC. They did not win drums last year but they had the best not including all the "pit" instruments (keyboard stuff).  The swarthy chick in the center is the best of the best.
