Title: Tarheel State Tornado Blogging
Post by: BigAlSouth on April 17, 2011, 08:00:43 AM
Man, did we get whacked on Saturday afternoon. Around 3:00 p.m., I was driving back from Winston-Salem, N.C. with my parents from a funeral and we began to catch up with a fast moving storm front. There are reports of two dozen dead in the state with 14 fatalities from Bertie County (near the Virginia line near the coast.)

This graphic shows several streaks withing the storm front with the tornadoes shown as dots:

There is good coverage at the WRAL-TV site. There were several tornadoes in the state on one came right through the downtown area in Raleigh.

I didn't get any tornadoes here in southeastern Pennsylvania, but there was a hellacious downpour last night that went on for hours.  Driving home from the movie, my car was kicking up a wake like a boat and I could barely see through the windshield with the wipers going full blast.  Thankfully it was a short drive.  Once I got home, I could hear the sump pump in the crawlspace running almost continuously.

I understand a Lowes (Food?) Store was demolished in Sanford.  That's sort of our neck of the woods, although not immediate vicinity.

That line of storms came through Charlotte around noon. At my house it was nothing special, a pretty garden variety thunderstorm. I don't know why they intensified in the eastern part of the state, but that was the prediction and they got it right.

It was a Lowe's Home Improvement: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1377783/Storm-death-toll-reaches-THIRTY-violent-tornadoes-rip-Southeast.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1377783/Storm-death-toll-reaches-THIRTY-violent-tornadoes-rip-Southeast.html)

And a Tractor Supply store there as well.

AND, since Perdue declared a State of Emergency, my CCW is null and avoid.  Again.

Ah yes, States of Emergency, i.e. those conditions under which the original purpose for getting a CCW is all the more urgent. Widespread damage, loss of power, potential for looting, limited response from officialdom.

Quiet, citizen. Remain in your domicile until directed to return to your regularly assigned Revenue Generating duties.

No, not a restful afternoon, but we're all ok, thank God.  This stuff happens; what are ya gonna do?  ::whatgives::

There's a lot to be said, though, about a remote prepper/storage spot, however.  I'd have hated to lose everything.

Glad y'all are safe.

It's upside down that those possessing a CCW, who are the more stable and law abiding of the community, privileges are suspended.

I think I've asked before, but with CCW rights suspended, is open carry of any kind disallowed too?

Gotta change that.

Glad ya'll safe though.  I've been bitching about our return to snowy weather, but I think that may be better than having violent storms ripping things up!

I am embarrassed to say that the present occupant of the White House carried the Tarheel State in 2008. However, my state also elected the first Republican controlled House and Senate since old Governor William Woods Holden was impeached (by Democrats for opposing the KKK)

All good and well; I'm looking forward to not having to hear Perdue's suthun, dulcet tones in the future.  Her and Kay Hagan and their concern for Nawth Ca'linians.
