Yeah, been there and done that a lot of times...best thing you can do is like any storm, properly prepare ahead of time, if you must travel be smart about it, and don't take unnecessary or foolish chances.
But, when it doesn't occur in an area for a while people forget what it can be like or new arrivals have no clue...compound that with the media's constant chicken-little routine and it is almost a certainty some harm will occur by omission or commission...and the media can say "warned ya!"...
