“They had arranged to have a bunch of prostitutes come by and one of the agents refused to pay a prostitute,” said author Ronald Kessler, one of the leading experts on the Secret Service. “Yes, doubly good judgement there.”
A former Secret Service member told The New York Times that only one one agent tried to purchase the services of a hooker — but the whole team was recalled as part of the investigation.
In the summer of 2008, the Secret Service asked for and received an extra $9.5 million to cover unexpected cost of protecting the candidates, in addition to the $106.7 million already budgeted. In all the Secret Service protected the candidates on 5,141 travel stops. More than 2.8 million people passed throughout the thirty five hundred Secret Service magnetometers.
This did not include screening 1.5 million people at events attended by the president and other protects, or the screening at the two national conventions, in Denver and Saint Paul...
New details are emerging about the incident at the Hotel Caribe, where the Secret Service advance team was staying ahead of Obama's three-day visit to the country.
A senior law enforcement official said the dispute started when hotel employees witnessed inappropriate behavior.
An employee approached at least one Secret Service agent and demanding that he pay extra money for having an additional overnight guest in his room.
The agent balked, which eventually resulted in a confrontation and forced diplomatic intervention.
The official said the guest involved apparently was a prostitute. It remains unclear whether more agents and more prostitutes were involved.
A hotel employee told the Associated Press the agents were drinking heavily during their stay.
The senior law enforcement official stressed the matter is under investigation and officials are still trying to corroborate initial details.
The embarrassing incident has quickly eclipsed issues addressed at the summit such as foreign trade, the economy; drug trafficking, immigration and collaboration among the 33 Western Hemisphere countries.
"The fish rots from the head down."
CARTAGENA, Colombia — A U.S. lawmaker says a "significant number" of Secret Service agents involved in an alleged prostitution scandal at an international summit brought women back to their hotel rooms before President Barack Obama arrived in Colombia.
U.S. Rep. Peter King, who was briefed Saturday on the investigation, tells The Associated Press that "close to" all 11 of the agents involved had women in the rooms at their hotel, which was separate from the one where Obama is now staying.
The New York Republican says the women were "presumed to be prostitutes," but investigators are interviewing the agents. King heads the House Homeland Security Committee.

Not good.
Kind of capping off O'Bongo's terrible, horrible, no good, miserable, very bad week.
More please.
CARTAGENA, Colombia — Five U.S. military members have been ordered confined to quarters over possible involvement in inappropriate conduct at the same hotel here as the 11 Secret Service agents sent home in an unfolding scandal involving local prostitutes.
Making the announcement Saturday, United States Southern Command commander Gen. Douglas Fraser said he is “disappointed by the entire incident and that this behavior is not in keeping with the professional standards expected of members of the United States military.”

Because soldiers don't party with hookers.

I'm jus' sayin'.
All I've ever heard about the secret service is that the were absolute pros this just doesn't pass the smell test. Some theories based on my (albeit limited) experience:
After all, for the people who were actually involved in using the services of a prostitute and those, if any, involved in covering it up this will be the end of their careers at the Secret Service. They will never be employed by the federal government again. Finding work elsewhere will be difficult.
Secret Service can now add "Friend of the Working Girl" to its Mission Statement . ::falldownshocked::
Turbo Timmy will get to the bottom of this, yeah, it's his department and he hasn't let us done yet, as far as he knows.
::)
What a fustercluck this is. Somehow, it will be ofund the it was all Bush's fault.

Talk about the game that can't shoot straight (or think straight)!
Two Secret Service supervisors and three members of the agency's elite Counter-Assault Teams were among the 11 agents sent back from Colombia and placed on administrative leave over allegations that they brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms in Cartagena, law enforcement officials tell NBC News.
The source said the two of the CAT team members were directly involved in the dispute with one of the prostitutes at the Hotel Caribe that led to the scandal. After bringing back the prostitute to their hotel room, the agents reportedly got into a dispute with one of the women when she complained she hadn’t been paid. The woman then went to the Colombian police -- who reported the matter to the U.S. Embassy.
Others involved in the incident include three members of the Secret Service Counter-Sniper Team, which is part of the Uniformed Division.
Cam you imagine what the wives are saying to them.
A probe into the alleged misconduct of nearly a dozen U.S. Secret Service agents has expanded to include more than five military personnel, Defense Department officials said Monday, as the scandal that erupted during President Obama’s trip to Colombia last week put high-level officials on the defensive.
Anybody see the alternate headline?

Why yes, yes I can.
Something along the lines of, "My lawyer will be contacting you."

Blackmail! ::laughonfloor:: Someone doesn't need the SS to get to this the most corrupt administration in history! All one has to do is ring the door bell!
All the years of no scandal whatsoever -- and don't think for a minute that during Bush's admin. such wouldn't have been broadcast and embellished -- and now, since '06-'08, there have been several?
No; something ain't right.
Have the US government provide the agents with prostitutes in the future. Problem solved.

Well, he did at least once.
I have to admit that my first thought was that the Secret Service crew was experiencing a loosening of discipline. Being treated like crap and working for a boss that you can't respect could certainly have that effect. But after reading the excerpts that you good folks posted in which the Colombian hotel staff accuse every single person of having a hooker in the room I lean more toward the "black eye" theory.
Has Obama thrown them under the bus yet?

No, but a purge has begun. Two supervisors let go. God forbid Congress pull its head out and get them rounded up before they get Ft Marcy Park'd or skip town!

Reading between the lines of the conversation between the SS agent and

I don't think they're quite that smart .
If they screw some body else they'll screw you.
Alas, young Miss Suarez, just 24 and with a nine-year-old son and a ravenous pimp to feed, didn’t care for the cut of her Secret Service man’s jib. He made the fairly basic mistake — for an expensively trained government operative — of attempting to pay a prostitute in the hotel corridor, and Dania caused an altercation whose fallout has brought the Secret Service to its knees. Which isn’t how these encounters usually go.
On foreign trips, aside from the 40 or so armored limousines, there are usually 200 Secret Service agents plus a couple of dozen sniffer dogs. Did the latter take any Colombian bitches back to their kennels? Or are they just the entrée for Obama’s embassy banquet?
For all the hooker-cavorting among a bored entourage with time on its hands, there was no one to proofread President Obama’s speech. So he stood up in public and attempted to pander to the Latins by referring to the sovereign British territory of the Falkland Islands by the designation of its temporary Argentine usurpers 30 years ago: “Las Malvinas.” Except that his writers got it wrong. So the president of the United States called it “the Maldives,” an entirely different bit of British Commonwealth real estate half a world away in the Indian Ocean. Were the speechwriting staff also face down in the hooker bar? “Jush a minute, baby. Hic. The preshhhiduh wansh a couple rewrites. ‘I call on London to return British Columbia to Colombia.’ Thash should do it. Lesh go back to my room and I’ll show you my prompter.”
Obama was already dealing with other diversions. He began the day complaining about other side issues that were competing with his optimistic message of economic growth in the Americas and the opportunity it presented to both the United States and its neighbors to the south.
U.S. insistence that Cuba not participate in the summit prompted Ecuador's president to boycott the session and other Latin American leaders complained that this would be the last Summit of the Americas unless Cuba was allowed to attend in the future. Some leaders cited old grievances against the United States to illustrate their complaints.
To that, Obama chafed.
He said he felt like he was in a "time warp" of "gun-boat diplomacy and yanquis and the Cold War and this and that" dating to a time before he was born.
"That's not the world we live in today," he said.

(CBS News (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57418600/secret-service-scandal-spreads-to-second-hotel/)) - Suspicion is spreading in the Secret Service scandal beyond the agents in just one Colombian hotel.
CBS News correspondent Whit Johnson reports that a law enforcement official told CBS News that the latest agent under investigation brought a woman back to the Hilton Hotel in Cartagena, Columbia, just five days before President Barack Obama would be staying there.
