Ratttsssss.  Well, the eggspurts said it was gonna be an active hurricane season.

It may just be an old wive's tale, but I remember hearing that an active hurricane season means a snowy winter.  I hope so.  Cold and snow means dead fire ants.

I'm not going to worry about it till I have to. Besides I can't control it anyways.

I saw the pictures of the huge rafts of ants and had a vision of napalming them - what a perfect opportunity to catch them enmass and terminate them in droves. And then my vision had a vision of burning masses of ants all running under anything that wasn't waterlogged and setting it on fire.

Yea, I know - I'm unsafe at any speed!

Yes fire ants....people in the northern states just don't know what they're missing out on.

I moved back to the frozen north from Alabama in 1965. I predate the antz.

Heh!

Yeah...we have enough with skeeters, bitin' flies (my ankles look like ground beef!), ticks,...and thanks to open borders clowns...a chance at crap like West Nile...carpenter ants (need more woodpeckers!) and thanks to the high water infestation-level frog population...I don't need fire ants!

And seeing those floating islands of them down in TX...I had a similar thought to 'Soup - flame-thrower!

And they think Cat 5 is still possible...Cat 4 very likely, so nothing to mess with!

And the panic is kicking in...

U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed an emergency order allowing the seizure of private guns, ammunition, explosives and property the National Guard may need to respond to Hurricane Irma.

Mapp signed the order Monday in preparation for Hurricane Irma. The order allows the Adjutant General of the Virgin Islands to seize private property they believe necessary to protect the islands, subject to approval by the territory’s Justice Department.

Mapp issued an emergency declaration Tuesday and mobilized National Guard units to prepare for the massive storm.

Yes - one can see the logical jump from THAT statement to immediately confiscating guns! And when will the guns & ammo be returned, one wonders...

We'll have to see how this goes...storm seems to want to take the grand tour, sometimes landfall weakens them and fresh sea re-energizes them...by the time Florida comes up who knows what mood she'll be in...plan for ornery though.

Be safe!

I'd use rope - duct tape marks will ruin an otherwise perfectly good sailboard, once his personal, one-way cruise has terminated.  ;)

2 hours in line to get propane and gas stations were out of fuel but had more coming I was looking for non ethanol and that they had lots of a 3.00 a gal. One woman had such a desperate look on her face I asked her what the problem was and she said I'm about out of gas I don't know if I can get home so I told her to load up with non ethanol fuel she didn't know that she could use it.

I'm not laughing at her she just didn't know I was thinking about how many others don't know. And drove off.

The latest report shows it going west which puts it close to the middle of the state all the way which puts me on the right side of the storm or as we call it the bad side. Storm surge around 10 feet.  I pray for a change in the next 24/36 hours.

Right now as it is all of florida will get hurricane force winds and as flat as the state is it won't slow down any till if gets 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up.

Irma still Cat 4...

And every projection I see basically shows Florida being absolutely screwed royally...

...but if you haven't skeedaddled outta there by now you'll have to hunker down and ride it out and hope for the best...

...all of south Florida can expect a surge of at least 10'...

...that's not insignificant for a pretty flat stretch of dirt!

The latest prediction shows it plowing all the way up Florida and then moving through Georgia and into Tennessee.  Good for us in NC, but bad for FL as it now looks like they'll be taking a direct hit.

Lived in the West Palm Beach area for almost twenty years.  Glad I moved over 10 years ago, cause I sure wouldn't want to be there now.  Still have friends and relatives there - 94 year old uncle and his son and daughter-in-law, his son spent last two days boarding up two houses and the beach house in the keys.  Talked to friends, some left and some are staying, [bad choice as far as I'm concerned].  Andrew was bad enough at 40 miles wide total,  and it cleared everything all the way across the state the, east - west - this thing is two times the size and is going south to north.  Who knows what kind of destruction it will leave, if it leaves anything at all.  Hope I'm wrong ----
Title: Re: Irma
Post by: Libertas on September 08, 2017, 05:55:33 PM
I share your concern Rusty...this a lot bigger than Andrew and it will be a Cat 5 when it slams into the Keys and a Cat 4 when it hits SW mainland and could occur at high tide...the hype on this one seems warranted, the dangers for all of Florida are real.  Hope folks are out or super prepared, cause help could be a long wait off!

I'm afraid this one will be worse than Andrew for the reasons Rusty mentioned.  Andrew quickly cut across the southern end, this one is just going plow all the way up the peninsula.

Miami ought to be interesting.  Vibrancy = looting.  I wonder how many are staying behind just for the looting opportunities.

Well it's now back to a cat 5 - 160+mph winds with some heavier gusts.  Talking heads at weather center still saying it may go slightly up the west side, but not sure yet. Still talking 8 -1o ft. water surge on east side Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm , higher on west coast- .  All family and friends that remain are less than 15 miles from Atlantic.  Have talked to all -- they are boarded up, have plenty of food and water, batteries and full tanks of gas, but few if any stations still open with fuel.  All Publix stores in West Palm area closed at 8PM until after storm.   ::praying::

Yes good for the east coast bad for the west coast but it's down to a cat 3. It isn't much but closer to what most housed built after Andrew can take for the most part.  Nothing is built to take a cat 4.

So far so good we have power and the roof is still on.  One town just north of me same county has part of it under 4 ft. of water and the tide is out and the real storm hasn't gotten here yet.  Rain has been falling on and off at an inch and half an hour and soon looks like 2 inches an hour will be here for hours.

Uncle from Miami, his daughter in Virginia she said he and son weathered Irma.  No power, cell tower must be down so their very limited getting info out.  All okay, don't know about house in Keys.  Also heard about some friends in West Palm area, they are fine, lost power though.  Nothing from the rest.  Good so far, keeping fingers crossed.

Miami ought to be interesting.  Vibrancy = looting.  I wonder how many are staying behind just for the looting opportunities.

Lo and behold:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article172469001.html (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article172469001.html)

They looted shoe stores, though you can rest assured no work boots were stolen.

Not surprised...

More douchebags -

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4870676/Eight-looters-broke-Fort-Lauderdale-clothing-retailer.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4870676/Eight-looters-broke-Fort-Lauderdale-clothing-retailer.html)

...and we have to read about outside the United States...obviously they must not be white...or even citizens...else the MFM would be all over that sh*t!

And in Florida you will get this kinda stuff...

http://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2017/09/10/alligator-wanders-into-downtown-melbourne/651848001/ (http://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2017/09/10/alligator-wanders-into-downtown-melbourne/651848001/)

And I present this without comment -

http://www.bradenton.com/news/nation-world/national/article172416337.html#fmp (http://www.bradenton.com/news/nation-world/national/article172416337.html#fmp)

And I wonder if this girl will be named "Irma"?

http://www.bradenton.com/news/nation-world/national/article172416337.html#fmp (http://www.bradenton.com/news/nation-world/national/article172416337.html#fmp)

And I reckon the land-based threat now will be rain, wind, flooding...and the spawning of tornado's...

https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/hurricane-irma-to-batter-florida-with-catastrophic-storm-surge-wind-and-rain/70002657 (https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/hurricane-irma-to-batter-florida-with-catastrophic-storm-surge-wind-and-rain/70002657)

And everybody seemed to cover the Miami crane collapse...must have missed the part of the sea wall being obliterated...

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-10/downtown-miami-flooded-ocean-water-crane-collapses (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-10/downtown-miami-flooded-ocean-water-crane-collapses)

50% without power...

...hope JF has plenty of gas to rock that generator!

And in a crowded field of jackasses...today's low-life Douchebag of the Day Award goes to little Billy "Batshyt-Crazy" Maher -

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-10/bill-maher-federal-aid-texas-and-florida-seems-unfair (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-10/bill-maher-federal-aid-texas-and-florida-seems-unfair)

While one expects a piece of scat to be a piece of scat...one would think in a national emergency even a piece of scat would zip his fly-trap...at least until people get their lives in order again...but no, this piece of scat is incapable of basic human decency...a condition shared among all progressive assholes!

So, this is for you little Billy -  ::doublebird::

My aunt lives in Houston but fortunately lives in a suburb on high ground and escaped Harvey unscathed.

At least it appears Jose is staying out further in the Atlantic...people battered by Harvey & Irma should get the break they need.

We have a little Echo at the lake...it works well enough on smaller trees and brush and such...for hardcore cutting when we had our storms nail us several years ago my neighbor had something that just sliced through even fat juicy sap-ladden pine trees of enormous girth like a hot knife thorugh butter!  I think is was a Jonsered...fricken thing was awesome.  I've known people with Stihl's that work OK, I've heard people praise and curse Husqvarna...Echo makes larger models and I wouldn't be opposed to getting one...our little guy starts easy, run good and have had no problems...it's just undersized for taking on larger trees.  But get gas...those electric jobbies are for pillow-biters!

That was what was considered the pro saw years ago but I haven't seen anything on them for years.  I'll check.  It looks like Husvarna has something to do with them because they service the saws.  They may have bought them out I don't know.  Tractor supply carries the brand.  For a model CS 250S is on sale for 350.00 18 inch bar.

Most manufacturers give 3 month warranties to pro's and 1 year to personal/household buyers...but no difference really because if there is anything wrong with the sucker it will manifest itself pretty quickly...so from that standpoint you should be good getting whatever deal you think is good...and perhaps if in a store with a guy in it with any seasoning will give you good advice on what works for him and what he's heard from other users...could also get recommendations from tree trimmer contractors, they might be a good resource.

18" should do.

I've read stuff about people taking the 290 over the 291...more favorable "anecdotal" evidence of use FWIW...

I think Echo's have longer warranties if that is desired...

Anything 50cc + should suffice for general purpose needs...70cc + gets into Pro series, which (grunt!) is always fun if you can afford it...but they'll be heavier to tote...

Oh, and with the Dreamers and other Obamians out there...

That is a good rule to follow for any small engine...I only put ethanol-free premium in cans I use to run mowers, blowers, chainsaws etc!!!

Ethanol crap will turn into varnish and hose stuff up!  I don't even put it in the motorcycle anymore either!

Hate that crap!!!

That is quite a chronicle.  Being held up by the Coast Guard, wait 7 hours to get in there...that's a tough wait on both ends...

Probably stupid as hell, but if I thought my boat could handle the conditions...be hard not to charge in there...probably have to rope me down!

And this -

Yup.  And a volunteer dispatcher somewhere not a bad idea either...
