Well, this brings Zeroxing your butt to a dangerous new level!

 ::hysterical::

Pretty cool though!

Dang......Wonder how much to create copies of my lures?

Don't be fooled, the "specially engineered composite material" that the guy talks about is actually more similar to sugar cookie dough.  It' made up of sugar, flour and a couple of other "secret" powders.  And the binder material is Cyanoacrylate Adhesive (CA) glue.  The parts that come off of these printers have no real structural strength, if you were to drop a metal wrench you could pick it up and still use it, don't try that with a 3D printed tool.  I have a few ball bearings made from this stuff and though it is pretty cool I would never use a printed part in any kind of structure or vehicle.

Make a negative mold.

Make a negative mold.

The "specially engineered composite material" could not stand up to the temperatures of metal casting.

So in other words, a basses mouth would tear it up.

It is a single step on a longer journey.

When the materials portion of the process is improved to the point where hardness and structural strength are no longer an issue it will result in a sort of reversal of manufacturing as we know it.

A hundred years ago parts were made one at a time by skilled craftsmen...guns, for instance, were all custom made. Things were very expensive to buy and repair because of this process.

Mass production and the assembly line eliminated the skilled craftsman from the manufacturing process* thereby lowering prices (and increasing employment) and introducing the concept of interchangeable parts.

3D printing (when fully realized) will mash these two methods together giving us the best of both with the disadvantages of neither.

*Well, not really since the skilled craftsman was still involved in the design and prototype development.

The point of the exercise is to make parts and then make the molds of that till you get to the end result. This was just showing off how it works.

Actually John, these came about because it was too expensive and took too long to mock new designs up.  Now a designer can create an assembly and send the parts to the 3D printer and have something they can fit together or even take to design meetings to discuss new ideas or concepts.

I like the idea of using it to create molds for custom lures.

I've seen the results in the car industry. It save tons of time and money

 Link (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-01-11/guest-post-insights-cultural-shifts-visit-hardware-store)

"On the topic of technical limitations to keeping guns out of the hands of the citizenry, let me direct your attention to the following article (http://www.3dprinter.net/gunsmith-makes-rifle-with-3d-printer)  on a gunsmith who "printed" a gun. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know, but I do know that it is inevitable. The first group that will make a go at it will likely be people who are legally prohibited from owning firearms, yet their livelihood depends on access to weapons; in other words, members of criminal organizations. Shortly behind them will be technically gifted people who, one can only hope, are imbued with decency and respect for human life."

It's a technology in evolution, the applications are potentially limitless.

Maybe I better lay off the fishing shows, but that looks like a gal in a muskie net to me.

3D-Printed Gun Maker at SXSW: We’re Here to Stay, and We Have Bigger Plans (VIDEO) (http://www.guns.com/2013/03/12/defdist-at-sxsw-were-here-to-stay/)

Using proteins, not polymers, Modern Meadow is an organization that intends to develop a 3D printer that can make food, specifically meat. Modern Meadow isn’t just looking to feed the Internet-connected starving; if you can build a steak — or at least chicken-style chicken-flavored protein chunklets — why not hormones, drugs, even synthesize replacement tissue for transplants and grafts?

Jay Leno’s 3D Printer Replaces Rusty Old Parts (http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/jay-leno/technology/4320759)

[blockquote]One of the hardships of owning an old car is rebuilding rare parts when there are simply no replacements available.
...
So, rather than have a machinist try to copy the heater and then build it, we decided to redesign the original using our NextEngine 3D scanner and Dimension 3D printer
...
My setup lets you create the perfect part. And you could press the button again and again--and keep making the part--twice the size, half-size, whatever you need. If you have a part that's worn away, or has lost a big chunk of metal, you can fill in that missing link on the computer.
