I saw that the other day.  Great stuff.

PASADENA, CA—Groundbreaking new findings announced Monday suggest the record-setting heat wave plaguing much of the United States may be due to radiation emitted from an enormous star located in the center of the solar system.

Quote
"We originally thought that if this star was producing temperatures of 100-plus in the South and Midwest, it must be at least 100 degrees itself," Kivens added.

Quote
"I knew it lit things up, of course, but I didn't realize it could make things hot."

"The big star heats the earth, and the moon cools it—I get it," he added.

That reminds me of Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies:  "Mars is out in space, hundreds of miles away."

Maybe we should start calling AGW cultists "Jethros".

I don't want to insult the biblical name, so let's continue to call them that which they are, "idiots". ::beertoast::

I actually forgot the biblical origins of the name until, you reminded me.

Max Bear Jr. hated Jethro Beaudeen  for most of his life it he hears this he's likely to find and kill all of us.

Hmm...

Not so sure about that, JF. First some details: It's Baer, not Bear and it's Bodine, not Beaudeen. Sorry, but I used to play drinking games with the Beverly Hillbillies reruns when I was in college. Great show right up there with Green Acres. Comic genius.

Anyway, I would like to know your source for Baer's animus toward the character that he has gotten fabulously wealthy off of. Check the wikipedia entry on Baer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Baer,_Jr.) He has made big bucks with the Jethro and Hillbillies association.

Max Baer, a bear of a man like his daddy, didn't care for the character he played; that's what I heard.

He nevertheless played the part with gusto...

I used to get a kick out of him filling the big ol' mixing bowl with a box of corn flakes and a carton of milk.

Man, this might be the thread-tangent of all thread tangents.

Actually in an interview that I saw years ago he swore up and down that Jethro ruined his acting career because he was so typecast that he could never get another acting job and hated that character.

I can understand that.  An actor must be frustrated when he gets typecast in a particular role, which then shuts him out from consideration for other potential roles he might like to play.

Leonard Nimoy was typecast as Spock in Star Trek, and some years ago he wrote an autobiography entitled "I Am Not Spock".  But I think he has more or less come to terms with it since then.

Bob Denver was a popular TV star thanks to his role as Maynard G. Krebs in the show Dobie Gillis in the early 60s.  But once he became Gilligan in Gilligan's Island, his acting career effectively ended.

It must be hard on actors when they become so identified with a particular character that they can no longer be considered for any other role.  Yet those who create a character which becomes a timeless cultural icon have achieved something that the vast majority of actors never will.  That should be some consolation.

P.S.  Don't ever underestimate my ability to take a thread off topic.  I can do it in my sleep.

The woman (name unknown) who played the treacherous, murdering FBI agent in Sons of Anarchy now has a series of her own, one with a little sarco-comedy, which I will NEVER watch, because, AFAIC, she played the bitch too well.

Yes, I know it's pretend, it's a job.  I don't care.

IMHO most of these actors are limited in breadth of skill.  Being cast in a successful sitcom is the pinnacle of their career and they don't consider that probability.  It's like professional sports, one is in the big game for a short period of time, enjoy it and use the money and associations to prepare for life not as a celebrity.

I've heard of soap opera actors and actresses who have been attacked (verbally at least) by "fans" who hate them for the roles they play.

I know a guy who hates Joe Pesci because of the sadistic murderous psychopath character he so effectively played in Casino.

No way...he was on The Hollywood Squares for years. That has to count for something, right? Hey, he even got to do a guest shot on The Love Boat. If that's not the big time I don't know what is.

Trivia: Only actor from the original film to end up on the television show.

One more...

The most popular HB episode ever. Held the record for most popular 30 minute episode for decades...

The Beverly Hillibillies, The Giant Jackrabbit, Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSGgrBeGKo0#)

You can click through to parts 2 & 3 after that one plays out.

Trivia:

Nancy Kulp outed herself as a lesbian in 1989. Predictably, she was a huge lib. From her wikipedia entry:

Quote
In 1984, after working with the Democratic State Committee in her home state of Pennsylvania "on a variety of projects" over a period of years, Kulp ran for the US House of Representatives as a Democrat from Pennsylvania but was unsuccessful.[3] As an opponent of a Republican incumbent, Bud Shuster, in a Republican district in a year in which US President Ronald W. Reagan won a landslide reelection, Kulp was the underdog despite the otherwise favourable climate for liberal Democrats in Pennsylvania as a whole.[9] To her dismay, Hillbillies co-star Buddy Ebsen supported Shuster and even appeared in a radio commercial in which he called Kulp "too liberal". Ebsen claimed that Kulp was exploiting her celebrity status and did not have a grasp on the issues. Shuster defeated Kulp with sixty-seven percent of the vote.

Dead in 1991 from cancer.

Don't sweat it. It was a joke topic to begin with so anything goes as far as I'm concerned.

And...Green Acres was so damn good it was scary.

Yes. He's subsequently written another autobiography entitled "I am Spock", in which he rids himself of the previous need to shed the character, and fully embraces the positive aspects of a life spent being identified with a beloved icon.
