The idiot wind is blowing again, and this time it is comprised of all the pundits going after Bob Dylan for singing in China, and agreeing to abide by an approved list of songs submitted to him by Chinese censors.
First, here is a report about Dylan in China. As Keith Richburg writes, his set list was “devoid of any numbers that might carry even the whiff of anti-government overtones.” Richburg notes that it did not include “Desolation Row” or “Blowin’ in the Wind,” which he did sing in Taiwan. Nor, he comments, did Dylan sing “Chimes of Freedom.” Dylan’s appearance coincided with reports of increasing government repression and arrests of Chinese artists such as Ai Weiwei, and the imprisonment of Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo.
The ignorance the media has about Dylan is most apparent in this AP dispatch appearing this morning in The Washington Post. Take the very first sentence about a forthcoming concert Dylan is to give in Vietnam: “After nearly five decades of singing about a war that continues to haunt a generation of Americans, legendary performer Bob Dylan is finally getting his chance to see Vietnam at peace.” The writer, obviously a very young person without any familiarity at all with Dylan’s work, does not realize that Dylan never sang about the war in Vietnam, and never joined one single protest against it.

I didn’t read the Maureen Dowd piece, but I saw an article yesterday about the “censorship”. Curious, I went to http://www.bobdylan.com/tour (http://www.bobdylan.com/tour) to look at the set lists. I try to see him whenever he’s in my area (southeastern PA), and I’ve seen several shows in the last few years. The sets he performed in China and Viet Nam are absolutely typical of the shows I’ve seen. I see nothing at all unusual about them, and no evidence of censorship.

Something they don't understand, Dylan works for a living. Bob Dylan is a performer and is paid for such. If his employer does not want to hear certain songs, if he expects to be paid, he will not sing them. Conversely if there are songs they want to hear he will perform them.
Surely they have been to a piano bar.

The last time I saw him, back in November (http://www.bobdylan.com/tour/2010-11-12-lehigh-university-stabler-arena), "Spirit on the Water" was the highlight of the show. They played the living daylights out of that song.

Dylan's not the greatest of singers, but he can manage okay when he wants to. He did well enough on "Lay, Lady, Lay" that it's one of my favs.

Some singers cannot and should not write their own lyrics. More so, some lyricists cannot and should not sing their poems.

For me, he does well enough right there. Like I said, not the best, but he manages. I've heard WORSE; far, far worse.

Dylan's not the greatest of singers, but he can manage okay when he wants to. He did well enough on "Lay, Lady, Lay" that it's one of my favs.
Mine too. When I was younger, I noticed that he sounded like a completely different person on that song than others. My sister, who I'd believe b/c she was a big fan, said he was injured in a motorcycle accident and it damaged his voice. I actually do like that sound of his voice in the later stuff, I think it works w/ his persona and the lyrics, but his voice on "Lay, Lady, Lay" was so strong and full of real singing ability. Even though it didn't slow him down, I think it was a real loss.

Nah, I don't think the motorcycle accident had anything to do with his voice. I read somewhere that he quit smoking around the time of "Lay, Lady, Lay", but I don't know if that's true either.
/By the way, he was supposed to do the soundtrack for the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy, but he bailed out. "Lay, Lady, Lay" was intended for that project, and probably would have been the title song.
As it happened, the title song was Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin' At Me".
