Right on.

My personal history began in the mid seventies and from that time through '93 it was cheaper,
cheap enough that 6 mpg was not an impediment to profit and in the mid-eightys new ones
averaging 10 mpg was a windfall (in a good way) profit. And to the best of my knowledge preceeding
that era diesel was always cheaper.  It's the EPA mostly driving the cost.

IMHO durability and reliably are the advantages of today's diesel. When the glow plugs went
out on my 5.7 a spritz of WD-40 is all she needed.

 Carb cleaner or starting fluid work great too.

Right tool-right job, RTRJ!   ::thumbsup::

Didn't think about the alcohol angle, but even with a FFV, if you go full alcohol, doesn't that burn hotter, cause more wear/failure?

Neighbor at BOL has horses, hopefully I'll be able to make a deal.   ;)

Good input Weisshaupt!   ::thumbsup::

 The only real problem with it is that it doesn't like to start when it's real cold too.

Thinking of something armored, sure to reach the the BOL even if small arms fire is encountered.

Defense from highwaymen might be more of a concern than surviving an EMP pulse, the latter would ground just about everybody, then it's on foot...till I can shanghai a horse or two...

I think the thing to do is go low tech as possible.  The more high tech, the more sh*t that can break (or more nefariously, be disabled by command).  In WWII the Navy preferred air cooled radial engines on their aircraft.  Much less to go wrong: no coolant system to leak through bullet holes, and the cylinders were lower compression and better able to withstand damage.  Planes would come back with fist sized holes in the engine sometimes.

What would that be in a BOV?  Something pretty old, which is a challenge.  I wish I had the wherewithal to rebuild an old engine and mount it in a matching truck of some sort.

Heh, nice card.

And yeah, I think the lower-tech and simpler the better.  But getting hands on that kind of stuff is hard.  And I think you are on to the answer - building your own from what you can scrounge.

I'll have to talk to my BIL about starting a project.  He is pretty handy with most tools, and while he hasn't gotten around to learning welding himself, there are people we know who can do that, as well as people who know engines we could contract with as needed.

I think something along the lines of a poor-man's M3A1 Scout Car (WWII era half-jeep/half-truck light armor (only 6-13mm thick), but it was AWD and simple suspension.

I'll pester my BIL and keep on pestering.

Not nearly as hard as you might think.

With the Cummins engine (which only requires 1 wire to run) and the manual transmission, it'd be a great BOV.

So, he put a $1500 sound system into a $6400 vehicle.

Obviously a moron, should be able to talk him down, eh?

Moron or redneck. Aren't they synonymous?

Rednecks aren't necessarily morons, I try to avoid morons...not always able to though...my employer hires more than its fair share...

Jeff Foxworthy said a defining element of redneckery is "a glorious lack of sophistication" but I would argue that alone does not constitute a redneck.  I know lots of "country" guys who I do not consider rednecks even though they have a lot of overlap into things associated with rednecks.  I have always attached an air of unprovoked belligerence to my definition of rednecks.  There's a difference between merely being low class and positively reveling in it.  Rednecks are the latter.

Oh oh...I think I sense Alan weighing in on this soon...

IIRC I think in his neck of the delta it's a mix of Cajun's, Coonasses, Rednecks, Good 'Ol Boys and City Folk.  I reckon Good 'Ol Boys rate top place and the rest stack behind...heck I bet even Rednecks rate ahead of City Folk if only barely!

My area has a strong French background, so it's mostly Cajun. They still have some radio stations that transmit in French, although the majority wait for the weekend. Out of 2 early morning TV shows, only one has a French news/ weather segment. And yes, Cajuns can get creative when the time comes. I've even witnessed a couple "hold my beer and watch this" moments.

But back on topic, finding an EMP resistant, easy to work on vehicle isn't that hard. You just have to know what to look for.

And even EMP-susceptible vehicles can be viable - as long as you pack replacement parts in Faraday caged storage. I'd steer clear of newer, heavily computerized stuff (for obvious reasons) but that still leaves a bunch of options.

Yeah, with me though you have to pretend I am not a mechanical/electrical genius...in fact don't pretend.  I know just enough to be dangerous, for serious decisions I call the BIL who rates at least above average on that stuff.

I'm good at taking things apart.  It's the putting back together thing that I struggle with.

The extra parts left over just means it was over engineered. ::unknowncomic::

So, if you take it apart and reassemble often enough, you end up with two?  ::facepalm::
