Title: The Darwin Awards
Post by: trapeze on April 26, 2012, 08:40:19 AM
Every once in a while one of these stories pops up in the news and I think they deserve some kind of recognition...or at least a place to file them.

I will get it started with this one:

Swiss woman dies after attempting to live on sunlight; Woman gave up food and water on spiritual journey (http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/swiss-women-dies-giving-water-food-thought-live-sunlight-article-1.1067359)

Documentary film 'In the Beginning, There Was Light' gave her the idea.

Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reports that a woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual diet that required her to stop eating or drinking and live off sunlight alone.

The Zurich newspaper reported Wednesday that the unnamed Swiss woman in her fifties decided to follow the radical fast in 2010 after viewing an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years.

Yep.

You know those lists that always tally the top ways people die?  Maybe stupidity should be listed as #1.

Stupid is almost a prerequisite, and thankfully that will ensure natural selection works its magic disproportionately more upon our poor liberal friends.

I think my favorite one is the guy that tried to steal something from a vending machine by sticking his hand up the chute, and then he got it stuck.  In his struggle to free himself he managed to pull the machine down on top of him crushing his skull.

I saw one going around (pictures included) of a would-be copper thief.  He attempted to cut wires from inside a fenced-in electrical substation. Needless to say 13,000 volts can incinerate entire limbs off.

We had two of those locally. They were in the median of the freeway stealing wire from the streetlights. How they could have possibly figured that they could do this without getting zapped is beyond comprehension....and apparently beyond possibility.

They fried themselves in full view of morning commuters.

ZAP!

eta - that's not even the one I saw before. The ones I saw were a Powerpoint slideshow, and in that case the electricity entered through the bolt cutters into one arm, then exited the other arm grounding onto a chain link fence. Result: both arms incinerated up to the elbow. Some of the electricity exited the groin too, also incinerating that area. That actually seems to be a very common grounding point on these morons. It somehow puts an exclamation point on their Darwin Award qualifications.

In the military fires are classified as to what fuels them, in order from lowest to highest - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie & Delta.

(See chart on page 4-3 in link below)

The clowns above are what we would normally call "Screaming Alpha's", though in this case they probably had very little time to scream.  The screaming was probably done by the poor bastards that found these idiots.

In the story....she is unnamed.....but wouldn't be surprised if her name was sylondra.

Since she starved, I guess it's safe to assume you cannot live by sunlight alone. She didn't become too big to fail.

LINK (http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/11/justice/texas-abuser-killed/index.html?hpt=hp_t2)

Quote
A Texas father caught a man sexually assaulting his 4-year-old daughter and punched him in the head repeatedly, killing him, authorities said.

The father was casually acquainted with the alleged abuser, said Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon.

Neither has been publicly identified.

The girl was left inside the family's house during the social gathering, while other members of her family were tending to horses, the sheriff said.

The alleged abuser was known for his horse-grooming abilities, Harmon said.

The father returned to the house, caught the man in the act, and stopped him by striking him in the head several times, Harmon said.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, while the daughter was taken to a local hospital in Victoria, Texas, for examinations before being released.

The incident took place Saturday.

Harmon described the girl as "OK besides the obvious mental trauma."

Asked whether they would press charges against the father, the sheriff responded, "You have a right to defend your daughter. He acted in defense of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him."

Harmon described the dad as "very remorseful," adding that he didn't know the man was going to die.

Authorities were withholding the deceased man's name while they notified next of kin. Officials did not know immediately if he has a prior criminal history.

Here in FL you may use deadly force to stop a rape (assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm). I assume it is the same in Texas (I would hope anyway!). In that case this Father will likely not be facing criminal charges. I say, 'job well done!'. A case to be added to the DRT (dead right there) files - but the Darwin awards thread seems like a good place too.

Hats off to pops in this case!

There was a fellow in Texas who defended his neighbor's house
from a breaking and entering, the only problem this fellow's
going to have is taking care of his daughter.

In a sane and just system he should not be charged with anything, hopefully sanity and justice prevails here.  I hope the little girl can recover from this and have a normal life.  I dated a gal years ago who was abused by a family member, that kind of betrayal goes much deeper and she recovered but she had (understandably) trust issues ever since, but the trauma is no less severe for this little girl, I hope she can be helped.

Ah, Montana... (http://www.dailyinterlake.com/news/local_montana/article_86a9d38e-f058-11e1-b794-001a4bcf887a.html)

Quote
A man dressed in a military-style “Ghillie suit” who was attempting to provoke a Bigfoot sighting was struck by two vehicles and killed on U.S. 93 South of Kalispell Sunday night.

“He was trying to make people think he was Sasquatch so people would call in a Sasquatch sighting,” Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Schneider said.

You can’t make it up. I haven’t seen or heard of anything like this before. Obviously, his suit made it difficult for people to see him.”

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Randy Lee Tenley, 44, of Kalispell.

Schneider said Tenley’s motivations were ascertained during interviews with friends who were not in the immediate area but were nearby when the man was struck at about 10:30 p.m.

Alcohol may have been a factor,” Schneider said. “Impairment is up in the air.”

Tenley was on the southbound side of the highway, about a half mile south of the highway’s intersection with Rocky Point Road.

“He was in the right-hand lane of travel and the vehicle was unable to avoid him and struck him,” Schneider said of the first vehicle driven by a 15-year-old girl from Somers.

A second vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Somers girl also struck Tenley as he laid on the highway.

The man, named only as Miguel, swung onto one of high-voltage cables causing a massive explosion before plummeting  to the ground in Santiago, Chile.

The moment was caught in a dramatic amateur video filmed by one of the onlookers.

I'm actually surprised it didn't dismember him on the grounded limb. I've seen images of people with arms incinerated up to the elbow from even less voltage than those lines are carrying (120,000 volts according to the video description).

My dad spent 20 years as a firefighter and EMT, and was always telling me and my brother "war stories" from work when we were kids. He said the grizzliest scenes were high voltage electrocutions like this video. It really causes people to explode, it vaporizes body fluids into steam almost instantly.

Hey SH, here's another spiritual journey for ya -

24-year-old Matthew Dawson-Clarke consumed ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic drink made from vines, as part of a seven-day retreat to foster a spiritual awakening.  From Auckland in New Zealand's north, Mr Dawson-Clarke died on September 3 after taking part in the centuries-old ritual, the NZ Herald reports.  In rituals using ayahuasca, also known as yage, which contains DMT, an experienced shaman guides those partaking through their psychedelic experience which lasts six to 10 hours.  The experience is said to result in inner peace after purging toxins from the body through vomiting, diarrhoea, yawning, crying, shaking and sweating. Imbecile.  He could have experienced all that just with a good hangover.  Sounds like to me he just wanted to get really stoned...and it killed him.

Congratulations, you are a Darwin Award winner.

I think if your parents are dumb enough to hyphenate your name, your chances of survival are already not so good. Bad decisions lead to MORE bad decisions.

Too bad he didn't have the presence of mind to switch on his video camera - we could have all watched.

His name, in death, shall be....Cliff.

Hey look?!  A digital age Darwin winner!

Any company dumb enough to lose a CEO (and three board members) over demands from political hyenas deserves to fail.

They give the Darwin Award to those who kill themselves stupidly before they procreate. The corporate cup should go to Mozilla, for sacrificing its corporate leadership to liberal pagans.

I think like many folks, we left these idiots a while back...but now it looks like more are jumping off.

A virtual buttkickin'.   ::hysterical::

Is it unusual that I have never taken a self-portrait? I mean I do have a picture of me next to my car at about 20 but that was something that my x took. I've never stood in front of a mirror or used one of those insipid sticks to take a picture of myself.

Is that weird or has the world gone weird around me?

You're not alone. I don't even like to look at myself in the mirror any more, much less take a pic.

Well, my body could use a little slimmin'
I keep my shirt on when I go swimmin'
And I ain't seen my feet since 1984
The old lady wants to roll in the hay
We turn the lights down all the way
Cuz I don't look good naked anymore

No I don't look good naked anymore
I'm a deep-fried, double-wide version of the man I was before
If I keep on like I'm doing
I won't fit through the door
And I don't look good naked anymore

Well, I used to be a helluva man
I chopped wood with just one hand
But I can't do the things I've done before
Well, it all happened kinda slow
But I guess I kinda let myself go
Now I don't look good naked anymore

No I don't look good naked anymore
I'm a deep-fried, double-wide version of the man I was before
If I keep on like I'm doing
I won't fit through the door
And I don't look good naked anymore
With each and every passing year
Came a lot of french fries and beer
And my belly hung a little closer to the floor
Now my belly is big as a truck
And the old lady don't wanna--
SHE DON'T WANNA!
Cuz I don't look good naked anymore

No I don't look good naked anymore
I'm a deep-fried, double-wide version of the man I was before
If I keep on like I'm doing
I won't fit through the door
And I don't look good naked anymore
No I don't look good naked anymore
I'm a deep-fried, double-wide version of the man I was before
If I keep on like I'm doing

And I don't look good naked anymore
No I don't look good naked anymore
