Title: CVN-78 USS Ford
Post by: Libertas on March 03, 2014, 11:59:29 AM
Nice graphic on this link, shows starboard side view and top view difference to the previous Nimitz Class carriers.

Scheduled to be commissioned in the 2nd quarter of 2016, so I wouldn't expect her maiden voyage until sometime around Aug/Sep 2017 if the schedule keeps and we haven't collapsed by then.

And...they might be reaching a bit with that StarDestroyer comparison.   ;D

Moving the island back makes sense to me, in previous designs the gap between it and the starboard-aft elevator could be a fustercluck and this puts the aft-most elevator in front of the island, should make jockey aircraft with the hanger deck a little more smooth too.  Of course, until put into action you never know, but they can tweak the movement as needed.

POTUS, healed the nation after Watergate (from what, I have no clue), twenty some years as a Rep, Navy WWII vet, member of the Warren Commision.

Maybe they felt sorry for all those falls, mean comedian treatment and crazy ex's of Chuckie Manson taking shots at him?

CVN-79 is already named the next JFK (commissioning ETA FY22) and CVN-80 the next Enterprise (commissioning ETA FY25).

I would prefer America or Independence...hope they are over this POTUS fetish...and definitely before the current Nimitz retires in 2024 I would like a CVN-81 if it comes along keep that name going.

I understand that,  all in all, hewasnt a bad guy,  but I just don't  think an honor like this shpuld be handed out lightly,  simply  because he  was a pres.
And, yeah,  I  agree  that they  need to cease this line of ship-naming, especially before they get around to the  current POSOTUS.

Yup.  The real test for POSOTUS will be Slick Willie, if he gets a ship named after him it'll mean the SCoaMF is likely a shoe-in.

If it is to be I Clinton should get a floating brothel and SCoaMF should get a garbage scow.

I can't imagine doing anything other than deserting if assigned to anything named after either of those two scumbags!

The name America has been assigned to LHA-6 (Large Amphibious Assault ship) currently undergoing builder's trials in the Gulf of Mexico.  Independence, Ranger, Constellation, Lexington and many other grand old names are waiting in the wings for assignment to new hulls.  Like you I hope this crap about naming carriers for Presidents is done.

Correct, I forgot about LHA-6, it should be having its maiden voyage this year, another LHA will be welcome, Pelelui has been our only one and since she is based out of SD I reckon America will be based out of Norfolk.  And the America is her own class as well.  LHA-7 (the 2nd of the America class general purpose Amphib assualt ship) has been named the Tripoli and I haven't heard a word since the contract was awarded 5/31-12.  The fate of the F35-B could be slowing things down.  Hull should have been laid down last yeat and a commissioning in FY18 in penciled in.

America is the designated replacement for my ex-mistress Nassau (LHA 4) which is moored in mothballs in Beaumont TX.  I fully expect that the announcement of her sale for scrap will be coming shortly.  The tow to the breakers in Brownsville is only a couple hundred miles or so.

Ex-mistress, how sweet!

Yes, Nassau was decommissioned back in '11 I believe.

Yeah, I attended the ceremony.  The weather was cold and rainy but they had large canopies set up on the pier, none of us was allowed aboard since by this point she had been mostly buttoned up for storage and rigged for towing.  MSC had to hold on the weather for a week before starting the tow to Beaumont.

A haze gray Navy day...seems fitting.

First launch and recovery - see clips here -

It's weird for this old salt to see a plane scoot off the deck without steam coming out the track!  But I guess that newfangled EMALS thingamajiggy works well enough!

And boy oh boy is that a big deck!

Never served on anything new...all my gals were dirty 'ol things!   ;D

I'm just relieved to know the Navy isn't putting urinals on these ships. The old way was such cis-male heteronormative bigotry!

And the rest of our service members. Except the trannys.

Crap, I was a bit optimistic on the EMALS...supposed to go 4100 launches before maintenance...real number is 400...and stress issues on the planes and unlike the old steam cats when one goes down all go down.

https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htnavai/articles/20180318.aspx (https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htnavai/articles/20180318.aspx)

This is a serious SNAFU and is going to put stress on older ships and maybe bring some old ones back out.  Probably not the old Enterprise, but the old oil burners perhaps as it would take less to get them going again...maybe.

Ford name maybe fitting...heck of a stumble.

It all started when the urinals got yanked...and you know what came before that...

 ::facepalm::

This isn't the Navy I knew...
