My daughter is sick today. She came into the kitchen wrapped in a fleece blanket.
"Mommy, do you have any paperdolls I can cut out?"
This is the child that my doctors would have let me abort. The one educators in my town would gladly teach about safe sex. The one my neighbors say I'm being overprotective about.
That's why I homeschool. Because nobody else is going to protect her.

Well put, Lady. I think it sums up what I've been feeling about getting into home schooling.

Isn't that our job to protect our children from those that would do them any kind of harm? Good for you and don't let anybody tell you different.

You'd think so. But I know people who think I'm harming my children by not tossing them out into the world and all its ugliness. There was a controversy in the local high school over a young adult novel that was required reading. I don't remember the book but I do know that most YA novels I've seen I wouldn't read because of the graphic nature.

You'd think so. But I know people who think I'm harming my children by not tossing them out into the world and all its ugliness. There's nothing wrong with kids playing with other kids but it's the adults out there that scare me more. Once you know the adults in your area you know who's kids you expose yours to. The call it protective and I see it as being selective.

I have two adult children now and I told them when they were at home that it was their parents' job to give them a strong foundation upon which they could draw when they were out in the world. That strong foundation was built by protecting them from inappropriate materials and activities and people. My husband and I have always been particular about the adults and the children my kids are around. We travel to other suburbs for sports teams they could be on because we don't like the adults coaching the local team. I dragged one kid to a half dozen pediatric dentists before I found one that would let me stay in the room at his office for oral surgery when she was 3!
Sometimes I think being stupid would be bliss. ::thinking::
But I couldn't do that to my kids. :) And it's not in me any way--I have too strong of a BS-meter. My husband makes me go to things just to give him a read on people.

And my wife thought I was crazy and being "mean" for NOT letting my kids watch "Pee Wee's Playhouse" ... That is until ....

Lady Virginia, I wanted to say more, but could muster only a thumbs-up because your post touched me and I couldn't think of anything to write that wasn't trite.
Nobody else IS going to protect her, not like you, and not like she will learn from you how to do so for herself.
