IMO the F-35 has fallen prey to that most insidious of governmental diseases - bureaucracy.  The brass for each service wants a do-all vehicle, the Congresscritters want pork back home and the contractors want the contract.  The latter two are ever-present but get magnified by the brass's desire for multi-mission teched-out all-in-one systems.

This is a huge mistake.

The "Silent Eagle" could fill a lot of roles for a lot less the cost, meaning we could have more of them.  The F-22 is awesome, it is the ultimate air superiority fighter without peer, but it costs lots of arms and legs.  It should be one of those items kept in manageable numbers and readiness behind glass marked "in case of dire domestic emergency".

In the event technology is circumvented through mitigation or overwhelmed by sheer numbers, the lack of sheer numbers to respond with is going to hurt.
We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

You and I know logic never works in a bureaucracy.
