So, How's That Chevy Volt Thing Working Out?

Well, to sum it up: Pretty suckie.

No one wants them. Consumer Reports panned them big time. They don't heat in the winter and don't cool in the summer. And they only qualify as an "electric car" if you really, really use your imagination.

LINK

[blockquote]Recently, President Obama selected General Electric ( GE - news - people ) CEO Jeffrey Immelt to chair his Economic Advisory Board. GE is awash in windmills waiting to be subsidized so they can provide unreliable, expensive power.

Consequently, and soon after his appointment, Immelt announced that GE will buy 50,000 Volts in the next two years, or half the total produced. Assuming the corporation qualifies for the same tax credit, we (you and me) just shelled out $375,000,000 to a company to buy cars that no one else wants so that GM will not tank and [will be able to] produce even more cars that no one wants. And this guy is the chair of Obama's Economic Advisory Board?[/blockquote]

If that doesn't piss you off as a taxpayer I don't know what will.

In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

That pisses me off as a taxpayer.

Heard that one may purchase two (2) Prius for the cost of one Volt. The Prius gets better mileage  and has an overall SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT than the Volt.

'Scuse me while I pull out my little V6 Camry.  --- scat

Uhh, GE is still a publically-traded company, right?

This is screaming for a shareholder proxy war to unseat the BOD that signs off on this pig-in-a-poke!

One simple question - Is the total of the tax credit going to come close to covering the maintenance costs inherent in operating a 50k fleet of these little disasters-in-waiting?!

Stupid on both ends!

Wake up shareholders!  Stand with the taxpayers on opposing this boondoggle!

Anyone want to bet on two items ?

1.  Stymie is named  "Salesman of the Year" by Chevrolet .

2. The remaining 50,000 Volts will be purchased by the G.S.A. ( at a sharp discount further screwing the taxpayers ) .

Yeah.

The only way the taxpayer can get any kind of deal out of this is by buying the internal-combustion vehicles being put up for auction as the government fleets are replaced...perhpas the glut of government vehicles will bring the unit cost down for the buyers...short of that...everybody just gets screwed in this deal!

I'm sure sales will skyrocket, after the millions spent advertising it this past weekend.

Right?

My guess is that the tax benefits, no-bid work, favorable regulations and the words "corporate responsibility" will all make this come to pass. GE will make out like a bandit.

I think they should have named it the Dolt, not the Volt, but I always favor truth in advertising, so...

Someone needs to write a childrens book......

The Dolt in the Volt.

Like the cat in the hat, but would be way more entertaining.

Heh, pretty good idea.

Gonna be hard working some rhymes I imagine!  But if it could be put together I think it would be a masterpiece!

We have a lot of threads documenting the stupidity that is the Chevy Volt, er Dolt!

These are but the primary ones -

But I think it most appropriate to post an update to this proglodyte disaster from day one in this thread right here that was initiated by our good friend Trap, who's thread title I think best predicted the epitaph for this sorry resource-destroying nightmare!

Yes, sure, the concept was electrifying and the demise is certainly shocking.

Hybrid technology is a valuable tool and works rather well on certain cars and industries but the government once again was lured into backing a project that was inferior to that of the market and of course the tax payers were forcibly hooked once again.

With all said in done, we're once again reminded of the folly that is big government.

I remember reading a couple years ago that a disproportionate number of the overall fleet of Volts manufactured were purchased by government. I'd love to see that final percentage once its all said and done.
