Title: Hurricane Flo
Post by: Libertas on September 10, 2018, 10:06:07 PM
Cat4 right now, aiming toward Cape Fear, concerns of a stall out after landfall and flooding.  Suspect stores are getting cleaned out of food, water etc .

Pan, JF & Glock I am am sure are watching & prepared.  Hopefully doesn't stall out.   ::praying::

Stalling:  nay nay, not good.  JF's pacing (by his telling), Gunsmith and I are tucking stuff up and away and ....... I dunno about Glock, but I hope he is and will be well.

Seems to be tracking pretty direct, but these things can and will shift around and gain or lose strength.  Right now they are basing storm surge warnings off of Hugo and other previous storms, 15-20 feet, wind shear, flooding heavy from Wilmington to Kitty Hawk and inland to the Piedmont.  And not one to miss a good panic attack the media is having kittens over Nuke Plants, toxic sludge, manure lagoons....

Still, would not want to be on coast or coastal plain, some high ground would be nice

I have a BIL in Wilmington that is being told by the locals not to worry and I'm trying to get him out of there but so far not hearing me.

You mean the '55 Chevy?  Thanks, but she's tucked away nice and safe in our garage.

Glock comes around only once in a blue moon now.

IIRC he is in Raleigh area...yes?  May be inland from worst of it but still a flooding risk.

Plus...these can spawn twisters, lightning...etc....

Hunker down time Thursday into Friday!

Preparation is equal parts intelligence, experience and timing...some people lack all three!

And for those poor libiots already behind the curve...you are warned, by everybody, for several days...won't listen to any bitchin by them jackasses!

This thing seems to be following the sit and squat nightmare scenario...hope that is wrong!

Current news is good for some, bad for others, however, it appears Florence is veering south now,
though currently still looking at the Cariolina's for a hit, though quite a bit further south now.  Of
course this can change again.

Well, looks to be a SC super-soaker as it's weakens, didn't recover it's last ERC event and after soaking SC and surrounding areas most models have it trailing out up Appalachians.

I saw a quote from a resident who lived a few blocks from the beach saying "We can't afford to leave". How much does a bus ticket cost these days? Seriously!

Same here, and the breeze is intermittent.

::sigh::  Now thinking of the stuff that has to be undone after it (whatever it is) is over.

I just saw that on the Gateway Pundit....Funnnnnie.
Years ago, I worked for FEMA, in operations.   We received pictures that had us all laughing.
A Hurricane had missed Corpus Christi, TX...went south into Mexico.  CNN decided to show
how bad the winds and rain were in CC anyway.  Picked a Pier and did their bcast of a dude
reporting from the pier, wind and rain blowing..    Unfortunately, a State Disaster Prep person
was down the pier filming and taking pictures.....of the dude dancing infront of a wind machine,
and water hose spray.

With all that is going on in the Carolinas over the past few days I forgot to mention that we had a "freak" storm pass through our area day before yesterday. It hit very suddenly with gusts into the 40's and rain like I've seldom seen in these parts. Not good for all the trees still sporting heavy foliage.

I heard a craa-ack! and instantly knew that it was a tree coming down. Grabbed my raingear and headed out the back door to where we usually have the downed trees and branches. Nothing to speak of there and no other damage, so I headed back in out of the rain.

A few minutes later I saw the emergency lights reflecting through the front window and looked out the front to see the fire department responding to a neighbors 60 foot Maple tree split down the middle and laying across the road. I helped cut up the remains and clear the street. Neighbor tells me that he's going to take down the rest of the tree - a shame because of the great afternoon shade it always brought me in the summertime.

But hey - I'll get a cord + of firewood out of it!

Once it cures out will you burn inside or out?  Maples, pines and fruit trees will add more creosote to a chimney.

At least home and people were safe when it came down.  Can always replace a tree.

I have a free-standing woodstove with a metal flue. Straight pipe. I fashioned a paint bucket into a scrubber that I run up and down the flue every year to keep it clear. I had a stack fire years ago (in a house I lost to my 2nd x) that was interesting to resolve. Learned about chimney care then.

The thing that gets most people into trouble is being stingy when burning. They load up the box and then choke off the air so that the fire smoulders. Yes, that makes the fire last a long time without feeding it fuel, but yes, it causes soot buildup.

I prefer a smaller but hotter fire. I have to tend to it a bit more often - but then I need to get off my lazy butt anyway ;'}

Yup, sounds like you have it nailed.  It is nice to burn aromatic wood sometimes...on special occasions...mostly in our woodburning stove at the lake we use oak, and burned modestly it creates very little buildup, everytime we clean the chute it is pretty minimal.
