Second Amendment opponents talk about the sophistication of modern firearms & how they're w-a-y beyond the muskets around which Amendment #2 was crafted.
But the SAME thing could be said about the First Amendment/Freedom of the Press. Today's sophisticated digital communication tools (computers, tablets, cloud storage, instant messaging, social media, etc) are akin to the same advancements in firearms - so screw the MSM's complaints regarding attacks and/or restrictions of press passes, etc.
If the level of sophistication determines whether or not the freedom in question is valid anymore -- then no freedoms are safe.

Your point is well-taken, however, repeating rifles go back to the early 1600s.
The main element the Left always misses about the Founders/Framers, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is human nature and its/our meaning and spirit, and it is about these that our Rights are based. The technicalities and mechanics of weapons and printing presses were and are always beside the point.
Just as the Bible was written and The Lord's Commandments were given with Man's Nature in mind, all of these things pertain to how best men should live their lives in relative peace and with grace.

The Founders recognized and paid tribute to natural law (God's law) when they memorialized our intrinsic right to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government in the second amendment - any tyrannical government. Had they intended to grandfather only a select or symbolic array of weaponry they would have enumerated that limitation. They didn't. Instead they omitted the technical details and allowed parity to prevail.
Of course the left - being natural tyrants - have always sought to chip away at these rights.
