...Jose Bautista of Berwyn, who is being charged with stealing a bicycle from a River Forest garage last July because police had the sense to test a bloodstained drape from where Bautista broke in to the garage.

The guy breaks into a garage that has drapes on the windows and all he can find to steal is a bicycle?! Talk about a Darwin contender.

That was my thought as well. You can't get city cops to take virtually any sort of property crime seriously. Half the time they don't even come out, they just do a report over the phone. And here they did a DNA test over a stolen bicycle?
Not complaining, it obviously ID'd the POS, but we have a pursuit of justice that seems rather arbitrary.

DNA test for a bike theft..........likely they are looking for someone that did something else a bit more serious than a petty misdemeanor type crime.........
just sayin'......
