A SC State Rep came up with this idea:

South Carolina journalists would be required to register with the government before reporting the state's news under a bill introduced Tuesday by a Republican state lawmaker who linked his proposal to coverage of gun issues.
The bill would establish a "responsible journalism registry" with requirements that journalists must meet before working for a news outlet in the state. Those requirements weren't laid out in the bill's summary, which was available online Tuesday. The measure's full text has not yet been posted.
Fees could be charged to be listed in the registry, which would be operated by the Secretary of State's Office. The bill also would authorize "fines and criminal penalties" for violating the law. The bill has been referred to a committee for debate.
The problem lies in there is no bill, nor will there ever be. But the media jumped at the bait. Hence this editorial from the Washington Post. Evidently, they couldn't see the forest for the trees.

It's the comments on the WaPo site that are priceless. Like these:
Great idea! They should also have to attend a 6-24hr class on honest nonbiased reporting, have their fingerprints taken, pass a test, have the local chief law enforcement officer sign off and pay a fee. Oh and of course renew and pay every so many years. The first amendment says Congress shall pass no law, says nothing about the state. If the 2nd amendment can be trampled by scum lime this journalist in his biased reporting then why not the first?
I believe since he took the bait hook line and sinker he's already proven he needs his press card revoked. Obviously he's to stupid to be allowed to publish!
If this proposal prevents even one child from being harmed by bad journalism, isn't it worth it?
