A feature this site has allows you to see WHERE people are perusing.
Go to the bottom of the first page, and under the category 'users online' click on the link right under it that says how many users....
and it will take you to a page that shows where everybody is at. pretty cool, unless your paranoid.
I also like the ability to read all replies to any posts you make, as well as read everything new that you havent read. It is located on the top right under you username.

Doing a bit of housekeeping over at the old digs and suddenly I remembered my PM's. There were some spots of brilliance in a few of them (to me not from me!) and I wanted to capture them. ProstituteBoards has a feature where you can back up all of your "emails" and I tired it but the anticipated announcement never arrived.
Oh well, just another disappointment from the left.

entering a post puts you back out to the topic board.
And entering a post requires a new window, it's not an on-screen option, if that's what it's called.

That can be rectified by you. Go to your profile, click on "Look and Layout Preferences"; a checklist comes up. Put a check in the box next to "Return to topics after posting by default."

There are a few things here that they have defaulted to the exact opposite of what seems intuitive to me. Once you learn your way around the control panel though you can figure most things out.

I know, brings back bad memories, dudn't it? I think it took about 6 months at the old place before I figured out it was even an option. I sure hope the same goes for here. In the meantime, we can always resort to manually resizing what's inside the text box like we used to have to do.

I won't know what those are, or how feasible it is for me to try to implement them until I get the attention of a forum software support person, and as I mentioned elsewhere, while the hosts have 24/7 server monitoring technicians, their actual forum support is basically a M-F 9-5 operation. Which I welcome. It means we're dealing with a business that's got better things to do than worrying about spying on behalf of political correctness.

I used the 10 pt font size option on this to see how it looks.....

ETA: I'm using Safari as a browser, and there are buttons at the top of the window to enlarge or reduce the font size if I need to. So I don't have to monkey around with the settings here.

It looks like the default for regular posts is "9", and the default for quoted text is "8". Their using standard font pt size (like in microsoft word) as opposed to the custom 1-6 sizes they used at the old place.
I like the looks of 10pt. I think I'll see if I can find a hack to make all entered text default to 10 pt.

The font sizes and the proportion between statements and quotes is fine for me. I haven't changed settings and use Firefox.

Yes, I work in a small printing shop. It'll be 21 years next month.
I don't run the presses. I do what used to be called typesetting, but is now usually called "prepress". I don't call myself a graphic designer, though. I'm not very artistic.
When I started in 1990, my employer had just bought a Macintosh computer with a 12" black & white screen and a 20 MB hard drive. I made backup copies of customer files on floppy disks.
ETA: Oh, by the way, when the Texas Air National Guard memo kerfuffle happened in 2004, I was highly amused to see the IBM Selectric Composer mentioned in the MSM. That was what predated computers for typesetting, and I've actually used it. We still have one, but it's under a dust cover and hasn't been used in years.
ETA2: I think my boss said it cost about $5000 in the 1970s. I'll have to double check that figure with him. If true, it's absolutely shocking how modern computers are so much cheaper and can do so much more than mere typesetting.

If you run across any mods, or have ideas for things you would like to modify, I will be glad to help. My day job is IT and I develop web applications for my company's internal uses (which means they don't have to be pretty, which is good because I am for sure no artist). I write them in ASP.NET and C#, but learning PHP (this forum is written in it) wouldn't be much of a problem. It's all conceptually very similar.

I am going out to shovel because the climate here did not get the message that there is global warming. I cannot think of a better way to start the day off than shoveling almost 20 inches of snow in late February. :'(

Oh I forgot to mention this, but there is an incompatiblity issue between this software and Windows '7'. Some of you may have already experienced a glitch when you try to post, that it keeps jumping back atcha, and you can't make any progress.
The short answer is to click on the compatibility button on your browser which is right next to the refresh button. you need to do this before you start a new reply however, or you may lose what you type. As best that I can tell, as long as you stay logged in after doing this, you only need to do it once. But if you reboot,and relog in, then you need to do it again. if there is a better solution, I'm not aware of it yet.

I do comment much as I am far from being a writer, but enjoy forums such as this for the educational value. I would like to read some lib opinions, but cannot as they mostly end up with namecalling and wildly outrageous charges. If anyone knows where polite discourse from both sides breaks out on occasion, please let me know. ::facepalm::

Welcome, johnnycab23513, you won't find any liberals around here. Reasonable liberals have been welcomed but none have appeared. There will be much informative Conservative dialogue, mostly polite also.

I've commented elsewhere that discourse - especially of the political kind - is at an all-time low. Long ago I learned (or so I thought) that I could talk to lefties if I didn't care about "winning" the debate. I remember when I could advance opposing viewpoints on a "this is how I view it - how about you?" sort of basis. All that seems gone now.
Our perspectives have become so Balkanized that there doesn't seem to be any place with which to start. Opposing POV's are invariably launched with a prefatory insult....like saying "I'm so sure you're gonna insult me so I'm getting my licks in first". Not much that one can do with that ::doh::
So we largely don't even try.
It's about Liberty offers a "safe Harbor" where you can "confer, converse, and otherwise hobnob with your brother wizards"

I was just talking to my son (HS sophomore) about Hillsdale yesterday. May I ask what kind of resources one must cough up in order to send a kid there?

Let me begin by saying that Hillsdale is worth every single penny.
Two already graduated and the next two have already decided they want to go there too.
As you probably know they don't accept any federal funding which includes any federally-backed student loans.. They are big on providing scholarships and needs-based help. If that's not enough they do recommend 2 or 3 specific private lenders (State of Michigan used to be one of them but as you can guess that went the way of the housing market). And they also have available private loans financed through the college itself. (We took advantage of this when we needed a little extra help--frankly, I think they don't offer this unless absolutely necessary).They also have on-campus employment (up to 10 hours a week) which they credit against the tuition bill.
Our family is caught in the middle--my husband makes too much to qualify us for needs based money but we make no where enough to pay for even a semester ourselves. (At one point we had 2 there at the same time--fortunately they both got some scholarships)So we did take advantage of their recommended lenders. (We could have done a home equity I suppose).
I did meet a woman once who worked for two years after high school to save the money to go to Hillsdale. In her junior year she ran out of money so she told them she'd have to quit. Magically (this is Hillsdale) someone donated the money to pay the rest of her tuition until graduation. She was never told the donor who wanted no recognition. Okay, so that won't happen for everyone but all I can say if your son is interested in going -- Don't let the money stop you. Get in and then talk to them about how to make it work.
yes, this decision has cost us money but we don't regret it. My oldest (now 24) often says that is was the best decision she's ever made and that she would be so stupid if she'd gone somewhere else. As far as she's concerned except for a few Christian-based schools and Hillsdale all the other colleges are the same. Same kind of profs, same books, same indoctrinations.
Visit the campus and talk to the professors and administration. They are unlike others at other schools.
My daughters had a professor who left another school where he had worked for 20 years and had tenure so he could teach at Hillsdale.
They have a junior day to visit but you can visit any time and your son could even stay in a dorm room if he requests in advance. Or you can visit when they have their CCA events or other speakers. You can stay on campus at their Dow Conference Center (which I love to do--and check out the Heritage Room in the library--cool historic books on display).

(PS--I have a HS sophmore also)
(PPS--my other daughter just walked in and said tell them it's the best school in the country!)

I've been receiving their "Imprimis" publication for years, courtesy of my (often frustratingly politically naive but nominally conservative) father. I read it monthly, and it served to put the school on my radar quite some time ago. Now that we're looking at college in just a couple years, the idea intrigues me a great deal. I've got a similar situation to yours - I have a sophomore and a freshman, so will need to figure out college funding for two at once. We haven't saved nearly enough.

Neither had we.
We don't regret our decision to take out loans and we (the kids and us) will be paying for years.
But as our country falls apart I believe our children will be a depository for those principles we hold dear. Frankly, they know and understand more than I did at their age. Actually, they know more now than I do! They both took the only Constitution class required in a college (except for the military colleges), know The Federalist and anti-federalist papers. They studied western civilization from primary sources. They both studied with Victor Davis Hansen (more than once) and Dr. Folsum (you may have seen him on Glenn Beck). I've met their teachers -- many of them are very accomplished and well-known in their field of study -- they love what they're doing and are truly interested in their students and could teach any where. Of course, many would fall into the conservative label but my daughter's music teacher (of course ;)) wasn't, others are more libertarian and a few are liberal leaning.
They recite the Pledge of Allegiance before events and before every parent dinner I've been to they said grace. At graduation, convocation, etc there's a prayer and the Pledge.
Getting a good ACT score is very important not only for getting in but for receiving scholarships. Know that if for the freshman year you don't get the financial aid package you'd hope for the student can always meet and ask for more assistance for following semesters. When my very involved on campus daughter needed a bump in help she was told she'd get additional help-- "You've invested in the college and we'll invest in you."
YMMV I hope I haven't oversold it but have encouraged you to investigate how to make it work if they're at all interested.
They don't called themselves a conservative college. They stress they are an independent, liberal arts school. Their theme is "Educating for Liberty"

If there's any interest at all then request some info on their website. Sometimes Hillsdale has events around the country for perspective students.
