Its called a tricorder because you can try recording anything, and now some jerk has gone and made a scanning beam for one.  (http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2012-01/tiny-tunable-terahertz-beam-could-enable-real-handheld-tricorders) 

Yes this will have all sorts of amazing applications for it - from medical diagnosis, to mass spectography, to monitoring the chemical composition of your fish tank.
It also means those nude scanners causing so much consternation at the airports are going to be built into everyones phone. .  We are all going to have to wear stuff like this (http://www.rockyflatsgear.com/Military-DU-radaition-attenuating-absorbing-garment-underwear/)

I catch any unauthorized pointing of that thing at me and the pointer's device will require remote data accessing.
