I had no idea anybody hired gas-pumpers anymore, I thought that died out decades ago?

Me, too. I can't remember that last time I saw someone get paid to pump gas. Although I did it enough as a child.

  I would love to go back to having my gas pumped and my oil checked and my windshield done..  But I'm giving away my age .

Don't hold yer breath.  There's no self-pumping in NJ and they damn well will not clean the windshield or check the oil.  They pump, you pay, y'all are done.

Roofs over pumps didn't get common anywhere until self serve came into being, when they didn't want wet customers (who cares about employees huh).   When I was a kid in Chicago,  few stations had canopies until the late 1980's.    Local operator Clark held out far longer then anybody else,  probably more due to not being able to afford to.  A few of their stations still are roofless.

Not in NJ, don't know about OR.

 Hell gas stationd used to give out Glasses and steak knives with a 3.00 dollar purchase.

It was a cruel game we used to play. We would come in over the border from Washington and stop for gas. One guy would distract the attendant while the other would "innocently" start pumping gas.

The game was to see how long we could go before they caught on, and react with mock innocence when caught. I don't know what the penalties were for the attendants or operators but they invariably took their duty very seriously.

A friend is a gas station repair guy.  Replacing missing hoses is his most common job.  It happens so much,  pumps are now equipped with shutoff valves so only the gas in the hose is lost.    That's why they stop working when you pull too hard on the hose,  you trigger the valve to close. 

He also has a side business reselling left behind gas caps.  There are still plenty that aren't attached to the car itself.   He just picks them off the top of the pump and sells them on ebay.
