...so declares R. Emmet Tyrrell (a conservative commentator who I have a great deal of respect for).
Emmet has a new book to peddle, "The Death of Liberalism" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1595554882/thedaical-20) which is probably pretty good although the reviews at Amazon (see link) are not good due to lefty trolls.
He wrote the book “because I noted that an ideology that does not respond to its opposition honestly and to the reality of, for instance, trillion dollar deficits is dead,” the founder and editor-in-chief of The American Spectator told The Daily Caller.
“Liberalism began to die with the arrival at the top of the Democratic Party of the Infantile Left, the Clintons, Jean Francois Kerry, and so forth. They replaced Hubert Humphrey and Pat Moynihan. The debate between conservatives and liberals ended because the liberals were all gone. Now comes the stealth socialists and cronyism, or ‘friendly fascism.’”
Asked if he may be a bit premature in his assessment of liberalism given how well Democrats fared in the 2006 and 2008 elections, Tyrrell said he didn’t think so. ”Those elections in ’06 and ’08 were the death rattle.”

I've heard him touting his book on a few radio talk shows and while I hope he's right, I think he's wrong ......
His confidence in the rise of conservatism and the death of liberalism is unsupportable by the evidence.

It is.
I think what he sees on the horizon is the death of civilization.

He's looking at American party politics and the current disgrace of the Democrat party and making extrapolations that don't seem to me to comport with the big-picture facts. Progressivism is an ever Leftward drift, hence the name "progressive". It trumps party politics. The "pendulum swing" is not accurate, because it always swings a bit further to the progressive side when it swings that way, and a little less to the conservative side when it eventually swings that way.
Once a given liberty is lost to progressivism; once a societal barrier or taboo is crushed by it; once a societal institution is eroded or broken by it; once society is trapped by another entitlement; those things are lost forever, and permanently in the Left's column.
The author's point that the American electorate is awakening to the horror of what they have allowed to happen on their watch is a valid observation. We may even correct that situation this November.
But that will not end progressivism. It may end us - indeed it seeks to do that very thing - but it will not stop "progressing", no matter to what depths of depravity and disfavor the Democrat party falls.

IMO he seems to have projected common sense, intelligence and morality onto a group of people for whom those attributes are severely lacking!

I believe you are both correct. I remember remarking on the state of disarray within the dhimmicrat party in 2005-2006 and stating that one more big loss would spell the end of the party. Well it didn't happen. They won - big and assumed control of Congress. Enthused and emboldened - and coupled with a retiring president who ran out of steam and abandoned the pubbies to the wolves - they went out on a limb for leftist ideological purity and backed Øbozo. The rest is unfortunate history.
The dhimmis will never abandon their party. Even if they have to choose between allegiance and eating. Because they equate allegiance with eating. Like the crips or the cosa nostra they signed a blood oath and there ain't no going back.
