LONDON — A celebration of free healthcare, the trade union struggle, the battle for women's rights and a fleeting lesbian kiss: the Olympics opening ceremony Friday did not shy away from weighty social issues.
The full body swimsuit made famous by Michael Phelps and other Beijing Olympians in 2008 won't be seen on anywhere on deck this year.
Beginning this year, swimmers are banned worldwide from wearing polyurethane and neoprene suits during competition.
FINA, the world governing body of swimming, issued the regulations earlier this year after an unprecedented number of swimmers broke world records after the high-performance swimsuits were introduced in 2008. The regulations went into effect Jan. 1, 2010.
Since their introduction in 2008 the suits, which cut down on fatigue and give swimmers more buoyancy and speed, have led to nearly 200 world records. Last year, 43 world records were set at last summer's world championships in Rome. Phelps wore the Speedo LZR, a full-body, 50-percent polyurethane swimsuit during the Beijing Olympics, where he won eight gold medals. Phelps broke seven world records in Beijing.
...I would really like to see ...Olympic Ultimate Fighting.
Well, you know Olympic boxing is quite emasculated what with the super duper padded headgear the fighters are required to wear.
I like Olympic wrestling since it's actually real as opposed to the fraud that is "professional wrestling."

AN Olympic guard faces the sack for spitting at an Army hero drafted in to boost security — and yelling: “Baby killer.”
The Asian G4S worker flipped as he patrolled an archery contest at Lord’s cricket ground with the Afghan veteran.
A source said: “This security guard was ranting and raving at the soldier.
“He was trying to defuse the situation but the guard was going crazy. He spat at the soldier and screamed at him. He was calling him a baby killer.
“He left the soldier in no doubt he meant he’d been responsible for children’s deaths while serving in Afghanistan.
“Despite the provocation, the soldier remained ice cool and didn’t lose his calm.
“Some of their respective colleagues arrived and the guard was removed.”
Bosses at security company G4S — which had to be bailed out by troops after failing to supply enough guards for London 2012 — yesterday said an urgent investigation was under way.
Hopefully this POS is dealt with, otherwise a good 'ol fashioned blanket-party is called for! The soldier showed a measure of control far exceeding normal expectations, I pray he encounters no more dreggs of society.

Yah, hooray. Give the guy a medal for "Courageous Restraint".
Not snorting at you, Libs, just at the whole egregious mess.
Is this the same company that originally hired non-English speaking guards?
Drygalla's Olympics were already over after her rowing team failed to qualify for Thursday's final, but she has been back to her native country to avoid any 'burden for the Olympic team'.
She had met with German rowing officials and 'stressed credibly' that she is 'committed to the values of the Olympics charter', but was sent home anyway by the national Olympic association's general director, Michael Vesper.
It was claimed Miss Drygalla's boyfriend was a member of a regional National Socialist group and had fought a state election for the far-right National Democratic Party.

Are they talking about the US Democrats?
Maybe it's just me but I really do not care to see our athletes wear the flag as if it's a beach towel. It's disrespectful in my opinion.
And I know that some people think they are fine but (again, in my opinion) a tongue piercing detracts from an otherwise attractive face.
And then there is the diving photoshop... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/olympic-divers-on-the-toilet_n_1730632.html?utm_hp_ref=comedy)

Speaking of tongue piercings, the Aussie gal who won the hurdles looked like a nice wholesome gal...till she opened her mouth wide...
Really, a pierced tongue...swell...

... after a lot of hard work and thousands of hours of training, he got the chance to represent his country and compete in the Olympics. And, to put the cherry on the sundae, he actually wins a silver medal. The last time an American won a medal of any kind in the 1500 meters was 44 years ago.
Manzano was brought here when he was 4. Like most immigrants, they came in search of greater opportunity. And they found it — for themselves, and their children.
...Note they did not come because they wanted to BE Americans; they wanted "greater opportunity".
