East coast of US, 5.8 mag., just
south northwest of Richmond, VA.
Felt it right here, too; Mark Belling sitting in for Rush in NYC, felt it as well.
-
Pentagon and Capitol Bldg. evacuated.
Now the "news" ghouls have started with on-site reports and "are there any injuries?" (pleasepleaseplease, let there be injuries).
-
I felt it too. I was sitting in my car taking a smoke break and noticed it start shaking. One co-worker inside the building also felt it and heard a rattling sound, but three others did not.
-
They felt it in New Britain Connecticut to. I was on the phone with our friend in the hospital and they felt it and right now there are crews checking the building just in case.
-
Huh, not a typical location...

And a nearby NUke plant had to shut down (hope they didn't screw that up!)...

You can fill out the "Did you feel it?" form (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/form.php?enabled=false) at the USGS website. I submitted a report earlier this afternoon. It took me three tries to get through. I guess their server was pretty busy.
At the moment there have been over 12,000 reports from 3500 different zip codes.

Of course they will, since it affected Washington, DC and New York City, the twin hubs of the LSM universe.
But seriously, are California quakes felt over such a large area? Seismic waves propagate through some kinds of rock better than others. This quake, even though it was of middling intensity, was felt by millions of people over an enormous area--almost the entire eastern half of the country.
In my area, southeastern Pennsylvania, there are occasional quakes of magnitude 2 or 3 which are felt by a handful of people who happen to be awake and close to the epicenter. I've never felt one of those, so this was my first earthquake.

The Obama Administration just announced that the Virginia Earthquake was caused
by a previoulsy unknown fault located deep underneath Virginia. They are
calling it the Bush Fault..... ::rimshot::

I'm just sorry I wasn't at home when it happened. They say that animals behave strangely before earthquakes, and I'd like to have seen whether my cats did anything unusual.
On the other hand, cats are pretty strange critters to begin with, so I don't know how I would have been able to tell if they were acting more strangely then usual.

There are three major faults running through the DC area:
It's Bush's fault.
It's the Tea Party's fault.
It's not my fault.

Some idiot on the local forum just posted a speculative piece on "did fracking cause" the earthquake.

Edgewood, Maryland, I was on a roof thirty feet up when suddenly thecrappy constructed condo started moving back and forth. Knew what it was and was concerned because I knew how shoddy the construction of the structure was. I naturally yelled down to the ground crew to beware the tsunami. Yes they asked , seriously?

Not sure if that asshat really posted that, but it doesn't strain credulity that he would think such thoughts, but either way there is no doubt an asshat posted it!

I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it was true. Too many "economists" believe in the Broken Window theory, which Bastiat debunked quite nicely.

Mark Belling (in for Rush) is venting on the absence of the ability and willingness to cope even with the nothingburger that was yesterday's little rattle.

It's what generations of liberal nanny-statism hath wrought, a sad collection of humanity so dependent on government that when left to their own devices -- however briefly -- everything is a crisis.
What a wake-up call these people have coming!

They're concentrating instead on fomenting preemptive fracking operations seizures right now.

It was the fracking that did it? I should have known.
Those frackers...mmm.

The environazis are right now casting around for anything environmentally "hazardous" to blame on or connect to fracking in order to shut it down everywhere. It pisses them the hell off that gas-drilling appears to be the work-around for not being able to drill for oil. Current reports are that the deposits are so vast, harvesting it will last for tens of decades -- it will outlast us all.

Some laws are meant to be disregarded as completely idiotic!
Civil disobedience in the protection of ones life, family & property is warranted...I'd like to see any sane jury come to a different conclusion!

"sane jury": That's sort of oxymoronic tain't it.

Thanks for not disappointing me!

Nah, I think it was the media that was driving most of the hysteria, as usual. This quake affected Washington, DC, which to the MBM is the center of the universe.
You also have to consider that most of the people who felt this quake have never felt one before, including me. And it was felt over an enormous area compared to California quakes. Fractured and fault-riddled rocks don't propagate quakes over large areas. California quakes tend to be more localized.
But no one I've talked to was frightened or panicked by it. Yesterday it was an exciting novelty, but we knew we were never in danger. Today we were joking about it.
Likewise, the local weather forecasters around here tend to portray every snow flurry as the Blizzard of the Century. It's become a running joke. I have a friend who works in the newsroom at a local Philly TV station, and to hear him tell it, many of the employees regard it as a joke too. It's all about ratings. You get more ratings with drama, hype, and hysteria than you do by providing rational commentary and solid information.
---
As I said, I've never felt an earthquake before in my life. Here is the sequence of events from yesterday:
I was taking a smoke break and sitting in my parked car, listening to the radio. The car began shaking, but only mildly. It wasn't violent. I guessed right away that it was an earthquake. I assumed it was one of the tiny magnitude 2 or 3 quakes that sometimes happen around here. I occasionally hear about them on the local news but I've never felt one.
I went back inside the building. I was about to mention it when I heard two of my co-workers talking. One said that she thought there had been an earthquake. She felt the room shake, and the plastic vertical blinds on the window rattled. The other guy had been out in the shop, where presses and machinery were running. He didn't notice anything and was laughing at the woman until I said, "Yeah, I felt it too".
I went online and went straight to the U.S. Geological Survey website. I figured that it would be the best place to get information about a small local quake, rather than a media site. That's when I found out that it was a 5.8 quake in Virginia, and all the news sites began to report it.
-
I've only been in two earthquakes - both "rollers".
One happened when I was at home with Random. This one came on real gradual. I've lived around boats all my life and it felt like getting caught in the wake of a passing boat. The floor just began rising and falling, very slowly, almost gently. Random, who was only three at the time, was being bounced like on a trampoline. It was strong enough to lift her right off her feet and I needed to brace myself a couple of times to maintain my balance. I believe this one was a 5.3
In the other one I was driving and suddenly it appeared like a tire was going flat. My van was wandering all over the road. I pulled over to the curb and stopped only to discover that it wasn't my van that was wandering but the road itself. It lasted about 90 seconds and then was gone. This was the notorious "Nisqually quake" that logged in at 6.8 and wreaked havoc with the Seattle historic district.
Fun stuff
