Title: Mulling a new toy
Post by: Libertas on December 26, 2016, 08:35:29 AM
Gettin' the itch for a new toy again.  You know how that goes...once the itch starts it's almost never satisfied until...well, it's satisfied!  ;D

Would like a smaller item I could stash just about anywhere, something in at least 9mm if not higher...but the stash possibilities get more problematic the higher you go.  And while I don't have enormous hands they ain't small, more long and wide than thick and meaty, so I am not sure a small tight grip like that of a pocket pistol will work, so scratch LC9 or a Nano.  Springfield XD-S's look like a nice option and come in 9, 40 & 45...but every time I look at them I end up getting a Glock, cause I figure why not?  I like the SIG P290 though some don't like the weight, I like the weight as it can mitigate felt recoil and might be a better grip for me, though the weight rules out any thought of an ankle stash, not that I am a fan of that method.

Anyway, still mulling...still window shopping...

I wish AMT's were still around...

Until my boating accident where I lost all of my guns, I had an AMT .22 bull barrel MKII clone in stainless. Loved it.

Have you looked at the S&W Shield?  If the grip is too small, take a look at the M&P 9 Compact.  Nearly the same size as the Shield, but has the wider double stack grip.

I have a Shield 9mm.  Like it a lot.

They made solid smei-auto's back in the day, stainless, single-stack mags...I wish I would have gotten my hands on one of their .45's!   ::bashing::  Dumb, stupid!   ::bashing::

When you're young, you think everything will always be there...can get it anywhere anytime you like...

Dumbass kid!  ::facepalm::

I'd love to keep the same flavor of ammo...when I can dive into the lake and retrieve some that is...9mm would be a new flavor for me I would have to acquire and toss overboard...the 9mm is just a 1/3" shorter than the .45acp variant...I'm not entirely sure why both in tritium night sights the .45 is cheaper than the 9...but if I can get a good retail price it looks attractive.  I'll have to put one in my paw and check it out.

Yeah I am thinking about getting a Shield 45 for variety.  I have slowly settled into the philosophy that with semi-auto pistols, 9mm and .45 Auto pretty much cover the bases.

I have been carrying the Shield 9mm in a Stealth Gear (http://www.stealthgearusa.com) inside the waistband holster.  Now that is the nicest holster I have ever used.  It does not dig into you, it's lightweight, and you simply forget you're wearing it. I think the mesh backing is what sets it apart, it's comfortable even if it does brush against bare skin.

Interesting...wonder how those compare to the N82's I have (https://n82tactical.com/products/holsters/)?  I have the Professional for the G30SF and the Original for my Bersa Thunder...which sadly are wet and cold at the moment...  ;)

The Original is just an elastic pocket to snug small frame things like a Bersa into, the Pro has the plastic part customized to hold your model...both clip the same and the tuck is comfy as the skin-side is leather...the only difference is with the plastic part you have to give a slight twist to release your weapon.

Does the Stealth require similar approach for draw or is that more just snug and straight?

The Stealth doesn't require a twist or anything to release.  The pistol is held in place by tension, so it's a clean draw.  A lot of makers are using this hybrid holster design, so they're all probably pretty equivalent really.

The thing I like about the Stealth is that it has some rigidity without being uncomfortable or digging into you.  The skin side has the type of mesh football jerseys are made of.

Well, that settles it then...if I get a new toy, I'll get a new jacket for it too!   ;)

I think next time I go to the range I'll look into renting a Springfield XD-S to try out, maybe something else like an M&P and/or PX4 in .45ACP to compare to before I decide on a new toy.

Speaking of ranges...anybody in North Carolina ever go to this Blackstone Shooting Sports place in Charlotte?  Bought a 2017 buyer's guide and they had an article in there about this place, man, what a nice club to go to!  Looks like a shooters Disney World!

     ::thinking::  ::whatgives::

Only three possibilities as I see it...

1) Just plain busy.

2) Trouble (insert guess here - _____________).

3) Found a girl.

 :D

I am purposely ruling out anything "bad"...positive thinking!   ::praying::

I'll hazard a guess on #3!

Depends on the girl, I'd say.

I hope he shows up soon.

 Where the hell you been?

Been rather preoccupied these past few weeks.  Work has been especially hectic, we're trying to navigate the process of moving away from an outside IT vendor, which has in the short term meant a bunch of extra stuff on my plate, stuff normally outside my job description.  But they did give us really nice Christmas bonuses last month, so I can't complain.

I have also sadly had to endure the loss of a pet.  My dog had an aggressive type of cancer and had to be put to sleep.  I've been pretty much shunning the Internet until the past couple days.

But I do appreciate being missed!  ::curtsy4::

Sorry about your dog, Glock.  It's never an easy thing.

We have missed you and I'm glad to "see" ya.

Thanks, I do appreciate it.

Now for the important question -- what decision did Libertas make about a new toy?!

Great to have you back!

And no decision yet on the new toy, but I am leaning toward a Springfield XD-S, but I want to rent one and try it out first...and I might compare it to a M&P and/or PX4 in .45ACP before I decide.

Like you I am busy...normally this time of year would slow down for me a bit, but recent financial challenges and labor issues bottlenecked several initiatives and projects and now everything is coming due all at once.  Of course the braintrust at Corporate never saw it coming...
 ::)

One local gun range has an event coming up, free rentals...I have to call and find out when, I thought in February...I might take advantage of that.  Could be dangerous though, for my pocketbook...I might want to buy more than one toy!!!

Yeah, sorry about the pooch.  Our family has lost dogs almost every way possible - car, disease, foreign object ingestion.  A couple made it to old age.  No matter how, it's a bummer.

I cannot recall breed Glock...For some reason German Shepherd pops into my head, not sure if that is right...

She was a bit of everything, a Heinz 57.  But I think German Shepherd and Beagle were the two dominant breeds.  Very pretty dog, sweet disposition.  It's a real gut punch to lose pets.

One thing you will notice about the PX4 if you try one out, the recoil is noticeably softer.  The rotary lockup really does soak up some of the recoil energy.  I have a PX4 full size in 9mm, which isn't harsh recoil to begin with, but even that is noticeably reduced.  Follow up shots are very easy.

The full size and compact PX4 use the rotary system.  The subcompact uses a traditional tilting barrel lockup, so it probably would have snappier recoil.  I am a big fan of the PX4 and sort of surprised they aren't more common.

Speaking of the itch for a new toy.  I am really feeling the itch for the new CZ P-10C.  It is CZ's foray into the striker-fired pistol market, and they are taking direct aim at the Glock 19.  It even fits holsters made for the Glock 19.  All the reviews so far make note of its excellent trigger.

Heh!  See what I started?   ::angel::   :D

In the PX4 I favor the compact in .45acp.  Seems like it would be a nice carry piece and I wouldn't have to acquire a new flavor of feed for it.

Dang, I gotta hit the range soon...it's been a couple weeks without smelling the sweet aroma of vaporized smokeless powder!

I think I ruled out the M&P...that funky trigger safety, if you don't have your finger low enough, it won'ty go "Bang!", not something I care to experience if I have to draw on a rampaging Mohammadan.

I think I'll replace that with a Desert Eagle 1911 U Model.

So, that or the PX4 Compact in .45acp...or both.  :)
