Ballpark 1960 prices
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:47:36 AM »
A friend sent me an 'old' list of prices from the Detroit Tigers, Briggs Stadium concession stands in 1960.  Thought it was interesting --

Local beer -- $.35  Premium -- $.45
Hamburgers -- $.50  Hot Dogs -- $.35
Soft Drinks  -- S $.15 - L $.25
Pop Corn -- S $.15 L $.25
Cigarettes -- $.35 per pack
Potato Chips -- $.25
Peanuts -- $.15
'Official Scorebook -- $.15
1960 Tiger Yearbook -- $.50

Game tickets from $2.00 [bleacher] to $15.00 [box seats]

{ Last time I went to a game at the 'new Comerica' park two years ago, the seats I bought looked down at the 3rd base line, [sec.135] three rows behind the box seats, cost about $85.00 each + tax and $25.00 parking for the game}. They were a good team then, last year they sucked.

Cigarettes -- $.35 per pack

30 years later...without any excise taxes (at sea) I could get for $0.20/pack and just $0.25/pack on-base in CONUS...

And now you see what the tag-team of Fed-driven insanity and payday-seeking anti-tobacco nazis have wrought!

Sure do.  When I was in it was $2.00 a carton on base and when the ship was out past the 3 mile limit, a carton was $1.00 because no taxes.  Glad I quit 13 years ago, now I think they are about $5.00 per pack and $50.00+ for a carton.  Time flies when you're having fun...

Cigs were 10 cents per pack and beer 25 cents per can when I was running a PX in Nam in '68-'69.  I quit the smokes a few years later.
I'm entitled (to be cranky).

I gave up the coffin nails in 1983...but I still enjoy my stogies!   :D

And back to ballparks...

Maybe it is nostalgia, being a kid, the era or all of the above...but when my father would take us boys to the old Met for a Twins game...the place smelled better and the food tasted better than any incarnation I've been in since.

Same for Gopher games at old Memorial Stadium.  The new stadium on campus is nice and harkens to some of that...but it just can't get there for me.

And the old Mariucci Arena...standing room only under the overhang (the cave), man that old place would get rockin'.

New arena is super nice and will stand a long time.  Still...

Libertas, man do I agree with that - in my area it was Briggs stadium for the Tigers and then the lions would play in the same stadium fall and into the winter.

the new 'Comerica' park is nice, but doesn't have the "feel"..

Have not been to the new "Ford Field" yet, even though it is right across the street from 'Comerica', but as bad as the Lions have been, who cares!
