Odds are seriously steep...but when it starts getting this high I throw some disposable fiat at it...
Est. $806M cash option...

Welcome to a string of islands owned by the soon to be formed "Liberty Consortium". (http://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands/katafanga-island)

Well, I'm in!
(I received two tickets for my soon-to-be birthday.)
-
My lovely bride purchased a ticket yesterday. I guess I'll have to go back to work.
-
I am in receipt of advice as to how many and where to buy. With 1 chance in some 274 million I think I'm safe in kissing those bits of fiat goodby.

Million you say, I thought it was along the lines of trillion.

OK, lets make it next to impossible instead of just damn difficult. ::bashing::

Not my fault these assholes continue to add numbers to the mix, it really isn't.

I won $40 on a $20 scratch of and converted it into Powerball tickets.
So I have a 20/1,000,000,000,000 odds....
So I have chance!
:P

It's a better chance than not buying a ticket at all.

This is the story of a devout Orthodox Jew.
He learned the Torah, Talmud and such until he knew it all by memory alone. He
followed all the commandments to a "T". He prayed and prayed for good fortune until one day he looks up into heaven and asks the Lord of Hosts why he never wins the lottery. The Lord actually answered his servant much to the astonishment of the man and said to him "Give me a break, buy a ticket."
-
There is a very high probability that Alan will end up 2 bucks ahead of those buying a ticket.
-
Alan is rolling in dough...but what he does with his free time is entirely his business. ;D
-
Not one number on any of the tickets I bought. But I have the winner this time for sure.
-
Hey, with that attitude you could qualify to become a bona fide Minnesota sports fan. ;D
Perhaps tonight the "Liberty Consortium" gets off the ground. ::praying::
But if I have to lose...it would be swell if it was to one of us. ::thumbsup::

When I get my cheque we will all be winners I promise. ::curtsy4::

Someone in California drew the winning numbers (only one so far).

I pray it's one of us.

Who's out that way, Ben?
I only had one set that only matched the PB number...
And nobody in my family is whooping it up, so...
I guess we all keep our day jobs.
-
Sorry guys, it wasn't me. I tried though. We all would have had a nice retirement on that south Pacific island if it had been me.
-
Bummer.
I heard somebody say winners also came up in two other states.

California, Tennessee & Florida - for everyone else, it's a tax on the mathematically challenged.

It's not that challenging...
They took in $2B, they announced the payout would be $1.5B and the Cash Option would be $930M, the top tax bracket is 39.6%, for my state the top rate is 9.85%. So...the math:
930,000,000 Cash Payot
(368,280,000) Fed Tax
(91,605,000) State Tax
-----------------
470,115,000 Net Winnings
This translates to a 23.5% share of the revenue generated...meaning 76.5% of the revenue stays with government!
Easy math.

Dang! Well, there is still Tennessee...Don?!

Agreed.
It's the purchase of a ticket that's a tax upon the mathematically challenged (i.e., you're tossing your hard-earned, post-tax money away on a tax that shows one to be hopefully stupid [unless the concept of a "dollar & a dream" thrills one's soul])

It's why I included "disposable fiat" in the first post...it should truly be money you can do whatever with, and let's face it people do plenty of stupid things with their money!
I find it hilarious that on the back of scratch offs and such they have a phone number for people who think they might have a gambling problem. I am guessing the person answering that line is the most under-work over-bored person on the planet!
