I don't think they were stick in the muds -  they were scared. They knew there could be very real consequences for them if they misspoke.  Watch some interviews with Russians during the cold war.  That couple of seconds of hesitation, a glance at whatever govt keeper is near by, looking for a clue if it will be okay to answer. And yet, Conservatives are the ones motivated entirely by unjustified  fear right?
