Remington has unveiled their new R51 pistol. It is based on a design Remington had back in the early 1900s, when semi-automatics were just becoming prevalent. I am pretty intrigued by this pistol. I love the looks of it, very futuristic, almost like something you might see on Battlestar Galactica.
Apparently these are made right here in Charlotte, NC too. It's on my short list at the moment.

Do not own a single 9-mil, but this one might change my mind...dang, is that sexy! Like a PPK mated with a 1911 and had a cute little baby!
I like Remington's upgraded 1911 too.
Unfortunately my appetite is exceeding my means at the moment. :'(

Don't feel lonely. I have the same problem.
Looks to be striker fired like a Glock. I still prefer a "cocked and locked" pistol, but that's strictly personal preference.

I've been looking for a 9mm. This may fit the bill. I've bought a bunch of 9mm ammo, even thought I didn't have anything to shoot it. It's what I could buy way back. Figured I could use it as trade. Now, maybe I can use it to shoot.

Nice...and it looks like it'll blow a hole in just about any, uhm...thing*...

It actually uses an enclosed hammer and is single-action only (like a 1911). From what I can tell, in lieu of a manual thumb safety it uses the grip safety. Could be wrong about that, but I didn't see a manual safety and to be SAO it would obviously use some sort of mechanical safety.

That really is an attractive gun.

You are correct on the internal shrouded hammer. Missed that the first time. However, after watching the vid again, the LOP for the trigger sure looks like DAO.
-
I was thinking that as well about the length of pull, yet every article I can find on it keeps calling it single action. I would be fine with DAO as long as the trigger has a nice pull. At any rate, the guys in the video seem to have no difficulty with controlled rapid fire.
-
Looks very nice. But I'll stick with my Beretta FS92 and my Ruger LC9.
They make me happy and I can't afford a new pistol.
;)
-
I find they're like potato chips; can't just have one.
Howdy, Bammit.
-
has anyone seen these in their local gun shops?

While it isn't an ugly pistol, I don't see one in my future... Not a big fan of the lines it has personally... Plus, I've always heard that real pistols start at .40 and go up from there ::pokeineye:: lol

Any caliber, properly placed, is equally effective. The challenge is the placement, which is more difficult with larger calibers on successive shots. I'm sticking with my .38 Spl, 9mm & .357 Mag. followed by a plethora of .22 LR.

Agreed. Plus the dramatic improvement in the design of hollow point bullets over the past 25 years has really been something of a quiet revolution. The two schools of thought -- light and fast vs. heavy and slow -- are respectively well represented by the 9mm and .45 Auto. Everyone should have one of each, and you'll have all bases covered. The other calibers are for spice and variety!
Myself I'm a fan of the 357 SIG caliber, but honestly it isn't much better than a good 9mm and is a lot more expensive.

Real pistols are used just long enough to get to a long gun. ;D

Plus, the action might be a bit too snappy for ladies.

Jeepers. How does something like that make it out the door from a company otherwise known for some quality products?
-
Quality control isn't what it used to be...and you cannot tell me they didn't know these issues before releasing it to distributors...I think they thought the error & retrun rate would be less than awful...they screwed up twice...strike three could be the consumer response hitting word of mouth and all the gun forums, social media and email.
A big mea culpa should be in the offing...
-
Yeah they've screwed the pooch with this product launch. It's an example of a product not being technically ready, but being pushed by marketing types. The classic conflict between engineers and sales/marketing.
I think most consumers are way more tolerant of a good product with a delayed entry to the market than a flawed product with an early entry to the market. That initial perception of something being a lemon can sink a product even after the flaws have been corrected.
They should never have put it on display at the SHOT Show if it wasn't ready for actual field testing. The fact that it wasn't available for test firing at the show already got the rumor mill buzzing, and turns out the rumor mill was correct.
-
OK.... Got to fire the R 51 and other than the trigger being a little sensitive, I didn't experience any of the "biting" or recoil issues. Fits in a pocket easily. I personally liked the flush magazine, especially when carrying in a pocket. Don't be a sissy and snap it in.
I didn't take it apart. Overall, I still like it.
-
Gunblast gives it a good review too. I've seen a lot of his videos before and trust him to do a good review. I think the one Military Arms Channel got was just a lemon. It had too many weird things wrong with it.

Next time I go to the range I might ask if they have one to rent, nothing like hands-on experience! ;)
