HARARE, Zimbabwe (CBSDC/AP) — A Zimbabwean immigration official says former U.S. Rep. Melvin Jay Reynolds has been arrested in the African country.
The official, Ario Mabika, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Reynolds is being investigated.
The state-controlled The Herald newspaper reported Tuesday that Reynolds was arrested for allegedly possessing pornographic material and violating immigration laws.
Reynolds, an Illinois Democrat, resigned from his congressional seat in 1995 after he was convicted of 12 counts of statutory rape, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.
The Herald said Reynolds was arrested Monday by police detectives and immigration officials at a Harare hotel.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy, Karen Kelley, said the embassy could not comment as it was a private matter and the embassy did not did not have a privacy waiver.
Prior to leaving office in January 2001, former President Bill Clinton commuted Reynold’s prison sentence on unrelated bank fraud charges stemming from an 1997 conviction.

In August 1994, Reynolds was indicted for sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer that began during the 1992 campaign.[1] Despite the charges, he continued his campaign and was re-elected that November; he had no opposition.
In January 2001 Reynolds received a commutation for his bank fraud conviction from President Bill Clinton and was hired by Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/Push Coalition to decrease the number of young blacks going to prison.
He had also purportedly accrued over $24,000 in hotel charges that he had yet to pay.
In 2004, Reynolds was overwhelmingly defeated in the Democratic primary by incumbent Jesse Jackson, Jr., with Jackson netting 88% of the vote.
Interestingly enough, I wrote Reynolds about something (don't remember what) when he was in office, and he actually responded with a handwritten note. Never had a congressman that actually responded with a real note like that. Weird.......
He lost more due to redistricting which put most of his district in the suburbs (which later became mostly black).
So Mel did look like an improvement at the time (Rhodes scholar etc).

We're in that damned district. It's controlled by the machine in Shytcago, so it means nothing to vote for anyone in an election.
Reynolds never looked like any kind of improvement. He was and remains a slimeball.
That district at one point was entirely in the city limits when I was a kid (late 1970's 1980's), so we didn't care what happened there as long as whatever it was stayed north of the Calumet Sag River (we were in Dolton). Then we found ourselves stuck in that district when Riverdale, Cal City and Dolton were added to it, and it was perfectly clear that Gus Savage was uninterested in representing the suburban part of the district. That's how we got stuck with Mel. At least then one Democrat could be replaced with another at the time because the district for that one election was majority white. But by then the ghetto had begun to jump the river so that was the only election where anyone in the suburban part had any say. Then the district got even bigger adding Lansing and South Holland.
Now that district goes all the way to Kankakee................ Its the result of some of the worst political corruption you can find. Most of the district has no representive to speak of.
The first thing they do when they move to Crete (99% on the EAST side of IL 394 - we're as far WEST as possible in the township) is to go to the Township office and ask for assistance. Imagine the looks on their faces when our township clerk tells them that we don't have assistance down here! And she just loves to do that, too! She's a friend of ours! ::hysterical::
